I'm not so sure about the black and white comment.
Sure there are really bad bad guys and really good good guys.
But most of the people are so darn grey it's annoying.
And a lot of those sovereign lords are way less than nice people.
The elves are definately evil leaning. But not on the level of the villains of the setting. However they are anything but good.
I think the setting has the same hero - villain dynamic Hickman and Weis always toss in (and the same overbearing meta-plot). But this time the common people are in a murky zone.
