Opinions - You just gained 3 levels

Mmmm, not personally the kind of thing I would enjoy. I'm another one of the players who prefers playing through the levels; if I'm going to simply wake up 3 levels higher, I'd just as soon read a book

I myself would be excited to gain new levels, but I would at least want an explaination, and I wouldn't mind roleplaying (or should I say rollplaying) out a few encounters... to take away the guilt of gaining 3 levels...

Would be cool if I aquired gear to go along with my new level too

Anyone ever level up more then 3 levels at once?

I'm a firm believer in earning your levels, even if the sessions have to be rushed (we did this in a recent campaign where the PCs are now 22nd level we rushed the levels between 1st and 6th in only a few game sessions but they were prisoners in an arena with limited RP opportunities because of the way the arena was set up).

I just bullied two new groups of players into starting two new campaigns at 1st level after they all requested starting at 3rd or 4th. Now that they've achieved 2nd level, found a couple of masterwork weapons etc... they are all feeling a sense of achievement and ownership which they would not otherwise have.

are you just testing out the idea to see whether or not you should do this for you group, or your dm doing this to your group?

Personally, I would feel a bit of a loss not being able to play those three levels. Having said that, I (if I were in that situation) would not be the only person involved. There is the DM and the other players so I would take ther feelings into account as well.

Maybe the DM has put herself in over her head and can't think up good solo adventurers to rejoin the group.

Maybe I am a minority among the group and that everyone else really would prefer the skipped levels ...

Heck, we play characters for the experience - not just to have some character sheet that says level X. As an extreme example "Hey, let's play a new game of D&D. You're all 20th level and you've just beaten the big bad evil guy and are now regrouping ..." Again, I understand that this is an extreme example, just illusitrating the feeling of loss I would have -- that there is some chance for a game experience that got skipped.

So, bottom line, I would feel at a loss but at the same time, I am the kind of person that may just remain quiet about it. Factors I would consider would include (but not limited to) the severity of the level jump, attachment to the character, relationship with the group, and the feelings of the DM and other players.

It would bug me. I play to play, I don't want levels handed to me. We often have lots of downtime in which characters return home, craft items and even help fight wars, but never do we give XP for downtime events. They are simply there to provide interesting backstory for when the PCs inevitably reunite.

free levels?

The idea needs justification. Say the DM has everything prepared and suddenly realizes the party is way too weak to handle it. It can just be too much trouble to change it or to let it sit until the party is strong enough, so the party gets a freebie.

But as a general case, free levels, or free anything, is a bad idea.

PCs are better if you play them from the start. Where's the real fun in just creating a 20th level PC?

The system is pretty complex and it is not easy to add levels and the proper amount of goodies [without giving the party a chance to go munchkin or forced to go wimp]

3.0 advancement is too fast as it is. While you do not have to stop at 20th, serious challenges [that are not too serious] beyond that are hard to find, and hard to justify. So the free level just mean the campaign will have to be shut down all the sooner.

There are additional reasons, but the point seems clear. You need a very good reason before you even consider just leveling up the party.
