In roughly two months (hopefully less, though it will be at least a month), I'm going to be revising "A Brief History of Orcus" to take care of some errors and omissions that are in the document. The largest change will be the inclusion of material from 3E, which the current document has none of.

Thanks to everyone who had praise for the current work! It's for you guys that I'm working on the new version! :)

Yeah I like it Al. You do good work. (Btw I still feel best Orcus drawing so far definately goes to Scott's site. ;) ) I will say I'll probably won't care for the 3e update, but otherwise you 1st and 2nd history is fine by me. ;)

You'll still be able to use it as a handy 1E & 2E reference, as the main body of the work is a narration-style account of his history. Given that it's fully annotated, you can just cross out the things that draw from a 3E source.

There'll also be some revisions and additions to the 1E & 2E materials as well. A few errors and omissions will be fixed. Likewise, I'm reworking the stance on Mystara-centered things with Orcus also.

The end result I have in mind is still the same as it was before: create a document which includes everything about Orcus for D&D/d20, annotated, done with holisticity in mind.

Thanks for the response. Voadam, I completely forgot about Pluto. The article I read in pantheon.org said that he was the Roman concept of Hades. Here's another quick question: Is Baba Yaga mentioned in BoVD?

This is the quote from my Encyclopedia of Greco-Roman Mythology book by Mike Dixon-Kennedy:

Orcus (Roman)
One of the names Romans used in referencing the Underworld; an alternative was Dis. The name appears to have been applied to Pluto, the Roman equivalent of Hades, god of the Underworld.

You know Alzrius, I always appreciate your work, and I don't know if you will take this as a complement or not, but your leaping kitten pic really creeps me out everytime I see it.

Maybe I've read too much Sluggy Freelancer, drunk too much gin, known too many cats, or maybe it's some combination of all those factors and some inchoate sense that that which is cute is evil, but there is no denying that in my eyes you have the scariest avatar thing on ENWorld.

I'd still guess that Orcus had an independent existence at some point, remember that for the Romans religion was potent cocktail of style, poltics, and unquestionable ritual devotion.

Which was their relationship with Christianity and Judaism was destined to be so tempestuos.

It's a nice, cuddly lil' avatar as long as it gets its milk daily and has its mittens with it. :D

And if you like my "Brief History of Orcus", just wait until you see the next project I'm working on...I can't say what it is yet, but its going to be another free PDF. It's going to be an official work for a discontinued campaign, and I'm working on it with a member of a notable d20 company. It would have been out by now, but we keep pushing it back to add more material to it (as it is, the new PsiHB may have just pushed us back even further...oi).

Al,

Don't worry I consider what ever else you mention after 2nd edition to be "optional" but the 1st through 2nd edition stuff, golden. :)
