D&D 4E Original 4E Monsters

Today's preview can be an extremely powerful and complex solo - I haven't done extensive balance checking to make sure it's safe, so I expect I'll have to tweak things...

Oh, and that's a catastrophic dragon - for which they've mentioned earthquake and typhoon as types. I've got volcano and blizzard as types in my set.

I didn't double check, but I assumed things like Pseudodragons and Drakes would fit under magical beast... I could be wrong, and in that case, I'd be more than happy to restrict it to just beasts.

As for the two attacks per round... looking at other skirmishers, it seems like they often had an extra damage ability thrown in. This is a bit more powerful than 1d6 though... scaling back the rider's strength might work to balance it a bit better though. I haven't gotten a chance to test these guys in play yet, so I'm not entirely sure how some of their non-standard abilities stack up.

Cobbled it together in Word as a table. Not really sure what the professionals do, but it worked well enough for me. I'll try and put up a default template later tonight for if others want to use it.

Ah, the simplest solutions are often the best. Thanks, ket!

Well, no sign of the GSL yet, so I'm concerned I may have to alter some things... but full steam ahead.

The first playtest document I'm making available contains 29 monsters - 27 artillery monsters and 2 minions that go with them.

Monster Playtest - Artillery

I'd also like to provide a link to a web album I've just set up on Picasa for stat blocks, in case anyone would like to glance through them that way or link to a specific monster.

Playtest Monsters Web Album

I'm working on the rest of the monsters for playtest but it's convenient for me to not just release them one at a time so I can compare them against each other and make level slides as needed. I'm planning on doing brutes and some templates next, but we'll see.

I had planned to give a direct mapping of pictures to stat blocks on Gleemax, where I can legally use wotc's images... I'll figure that out soon, but I've got a D&D game to go run.
