D&D 4E Original 4E Monsters

For the few people still lurking - anyone know good ways to obtain volunteer artwork? I've been more than happy to try and learn how to make pdfs, layout text, get a little practice on writing, whatever... but I'm no artist and it occurs to me I should probably have some kind of cover art. I just don't want to have to spend a lot of money for a project I'm doing entirely for free.

I'd be happy to volunteer - see an example of my bitmap work here, or my vector work here.

Doesn't hurt me to do the occasional preview, now that I've fallen far out of the public eye:

Flameborn is a race, it gets 5 + 1/2 level fire resistance, deals +1d12 fire damage on a melee critical, and gets +2 endurance for a skill bonus. There's also a Flameborn Reaver making an appearance as a Brute.

Hey -

Public eye or not, I'm still using your monsters, and am really interested in seeing them finalized!

Keep up the good work!

I've been knocking out a ton of original monsters since the PDFs leaked... I wanted to run Kobolds without just the same old ones we first saw 4th Edition, so I churned out these guys. I figured there weren't enough Kobolds taking advantage of the face that they like to use critters to assist them in battle, so I solved that problem by making these two.

Kobold Beastmaster Level 3 Controller(Leader)
Small Natural Humanoid XP 150
Initiative
+3 Senses Perception +2; darkvision
Hp 46 Bloodied 23
AC 17 Fort 15 Ref 15 Will 16
Speed 6
:bmelee: Whip(standard, at-will)
Reach 2; +6 vs. AC; 1d8+1 damage plus followup
Followup: +5 vs. Reflex; the target is grabbed until escape.
:close: Beast’s Call(standard, encounter)
Close Burst 10; every Beast in range may make an immediate basic attack.
:melee: Constrict(standard, usable at-will against a grabbed foe)
+6 vs. Fortitude; 1d6+3 and the target is Restrained until escape. The target takes a –2 penalty to his escape attempts.
Shifty(minor, at-will)
The Kobold shifts 1 square.
Alignment Evil Languages Common, Draconic
Skills Nature +9, Insight +7
Str 12(+2) Con 14(+3) Dex 14(+3) [/b]Int[/b] 13(+2) Wis 12(+2) Cha 17(+4)

Kobold Beastrider Level 2 Skirmisher
Small Natural Humanoid XP 125
Initiative
+3 Senses Perception +1; darkvision
Hp 36 Bloodied 18
AC 15 Fort 15 Ref 14 Will 13
Speed 6
:bmelee: Lance(standard, at-will)
Reach 2; +8 vs. AC; 1d10+4 damage
Two Hearts as One(immediate reaction, when mount makes an attack, at-will)
Whenever the Beastrider's mount makes an attack, the Beastrider may make a Lance attack along with it.
Ride
The Kobold Beastrider can mount any medium or larger beast as a minor action. While mounted, he gains Cover(+2 AC).
Shifty(minor, at-will)
The Kobold shifts 1 square. This can be used to allow his mount to shift 1 square as a free action.
Alignment Evil Languages Common, Draconic
Skills Acrobatics +7, Nature +8, Insight +6
Str 18(+5) Con 12(+2) Dex 15(+3) Int 11(+1) Wis 10(+1) Cha 14(+3)

I've got the Beastmaster set up with a group of Dire and Giant rats... I considered Wolves, but I just went for the lower XP cost. I wasn't sure how well a pack of tripping wolves would stack with the mass of basic attacks he'd grant them anyway, although I doubt it would've been too bad.

I put the Beastrider on a Hyena, just for fun. I only got to include one in the section of my campaign that includes Kobolds, but the idea of using a 'pack' of these guys did seem like it'd be pretty fun.

Magical beasts tend to be things that we wouldn't really think of as 'beasts' like grell, dragons, atropals, etc... may be better to restrict both abilities to just beasts. Also the two hearts of one means that it automatically gets 2 attacks every round basically... is that intended? Most mounts now tell the rider what he gets, rather than the other way around fwiw.

And yeah, I hear you on the more kobold types - I'm still not sure if I'm running KoS, but if I do, I'll be adding some more kobold types.

Dragons totally fit a Kobold Beastmaster, do they not? ;)
