while waiting for it to be large enough to produce a settler (i.e. size 3).

Unlike in previous Civ games, cities aren't abandoned if they are too small to build settlers: You magically get free people in the settlers. Sometimes it's best to crank out settlers from cities that have just been settled themselves!

The only fault I can find with the game is the lack of custom units, those were so much fun in Alpha Centauri.

Try playing the germans, maybe its my computer but its really easy to win with them 7 for 7 I've found a bonus settler in a hut in the first 10 turns.

Actualy that is incorrect. The city will keep spending resources on the settler/work until there is enough population to make one and still leave the city with a population of 1.

The Industrious advantage is great. With Replaceable Parts and Democracy you can build a road in one worker/turn. Great for getting the mobility/production advantage at the beggining of the industrial age, and when invading someone rapidly building a railroad behind you to connect you instantaneously with your production centres is a huge advantage.
