Ok, but not every movie done from a book has to be a total fiasco. Look at LotR, or at many other examples. Seriously though, the statement about movies not doing justice to a book is absolutely true. I'm sure that everyone could name dozens of examples. One that sticks out in my mind is First Blood, which was an excellent cat-and-mouse thriller novel set in the deep south during the Vietnam war with an ordinary looking guy who turned out to be not so ordinary. The Stallone film totally ruined every part of it by changing the location, time period, and totally mis-casting the main character.
