I went through the same thing about two months ago. My wife called me about the blood test results on a Wednesday while I was at work. I got laid off two days later and she is a stay-at-home mother for our other daughter.
The hardest day was the day of the amnio. It was especially bad when, during the pre-amnio ultrasound, one tech looks at the other and says, "Oh, she really needs to know that." Turns out they were discussing the ultrasound immediately preceding ours, but my heart stopped. (I was too relieved to be truly angry with the tech.)
As it turns out, everything is okay with my daughter (thank God), but I understand the stress of not knowing and the battery of tests. Thought it might help for you to know that someone else was just right there with you. If you want to discuss it more off-list, email me at

One of the things that really got me through that time was reading the Bible. I read one of the Gospels (Luke, I believe), Acts, and a couple of the shorter letters (Ephesians and Galatians). I'd never really read much of the Bible before and it was deeply relaxing, soothing, and reassuring. If you aren't a Christian, YMMV, but if you don't claim any personal deity, now might be a good time to find one.
