[OT] Bali terrorist attacks

Indonesian government is completely irresponsible. In many ways, one could say their nation-state is a failure (in the same way as, say, yugoslavia). Aceh et al. has been going on for years. a country of islands like indonesia has proved too difficult to hold together in the absence of a dictator like suharto.

I will never go to indonesia in the forseeable future. I feel bad for all those that died. It is the worst when humans die b/c of human stupidity. somehow, when tornados or floods kill it seems less tragic, if only because we can blame god or whatever. the indonesian government has been dodging their responsibility for terrorists, and if anything positive comes from this, I hope that people in SE asia have a little better understanding that terrorism doesn't just mean anti-america. You can dislike the US if you want, but crazy people will still blow you up. They don't care what YOU believe.

One of the players from my group is a rugby player. Apparently he was in Bali. We don't know whether or not he is ok, but the news said that there were three rugby teams from Hong Kong in Bali and that some players and fans are missing.

Indonesia isn't a nation-state. It is a multi-national empire, dominated by the Javanese, and assembled by military conquest 1947-1975.

Last night, a bomb went off at a nightclub in Bali, so far killing over 180 people, many of them Australians. It is not confirmed to be a terrorist act as of yet, but it is most likely.

Umm. What else could it be than a terrorist attack? Is there any way that anyone could detonate a bomb in a crowded nightclub and not be a terrorist?

Just a pre-emptive warning (I'm far too cautious) -- let's keep this to factual info, and not political opinions, folks. Thanks! :)

Having lived in Indonesia (Sumatra) for two years (1993-1994), I found the country to be extremely volatile and the people worshiped Americans then, it was a Natives versus Chinese situation then. But then, I was also mistaken for a supernatural creature and had money so I lived the high life.

I wouldn't set foot anywhere near that place now. Such a shame too. It is always too bad when extremists of any type start attacking people for their own agendas. I hope that the perpetrators of this crime are actually brought to justice ( a flexible term in Indonesia as it is) as swiftly as possible.

Ah, but Indonesia cannot have terrorism, because according to its laws, terrorists do not exist in Indonesia. There was a recent furor over this, and the government can't go back on its word now. Thus, this cannot be a terrorist act, because that's impossible by law.

The law says Indonesia has no terrorists + there was a bomb set off in a nightclub = Not a terrorist act

Just wait until the police catch the scapegoat(s)... sorry, my apologies, the suspect(s). It will only get worse. Hopefully you folks will be spared the details--I'm just sick of it all.

Latest news: One of the teachers at the local international school is missing. Right now we have ninth graders scattered throughout the islands on a 'project week'. Some are being recalled ASAP, others are going to come back later, as the school judges they are relatively safe; perhaps more safe then here in the capital!

I can hardly wait to see what our ever-eloquent government says about this...

Tlielaxu, my thoughts and best wishes go out to your friend, and to any others that may be out there.

Human beings realy get me down every now and then. :(
