[OT] Board Game suggestions?

RoboRally, Settlers of Cataan, and HeroQuest would be my recommendations. Also, we play Cosmic Encounter quite a bit, but the old one with all the expansions. I have not played the new Haze Bros. edition.

You also might want to give cards a try. 3 handed Pinochle can be fun. There is a game called Fluxx which is a blast as well.

Yeah, I've played Settlers of Catan (with the expansion!) and it's a pretty fun game. I've only played with 4, but I know it works for 3 as well.

For three people, Settlers of Catan, mentioned above, is a(admittedly only a few years old) classic.

I also like Tigris and Euphrates, in either its German or English version: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewitem.php3?gameid=42

El Grande: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewitem.php3?gameid=93
(El Grande is good with 3, passable with 5, but really shines with 4 or 5)

Republic of Rome is a fantastic game that's somewhat more complicated than these first three (but very satisfying):

I would also recommend Settlers. Its pretty well balanced, its easy to learn and straightforward to play. Our group plays tons of board games, and Settlers stayed at the top of the heap for a long time.

"Torres" is another German game for 2-4. Its a strategic building game, with the theme that the players are princes adding to the castles of the kingdom. Despite being a challenging game and a lot of fun; its strangely non-conflict oriented, which is good for certain gamers.

"Through the Desert" is an area-enclosing game; we call it "Pastel Camels" because of the 100's of small, attractively colored pieces. ;-) Despite having lots of pieces, its very straightforward to explain; in some ways its like a multiplayer version of Go. Enclose area; keep others from enclosing more area than you.

"Carcassone" is our current favorite. Its a tiled building game; draw a tile from the box, add it to the board and then decide how to occupy it with your limited resources. The theme is a medieval countryside. It can be played with 2-5; the fewer people the more strategic it becomes.

All these games are German, but a lot of better game stores are making an effort to stock German games these days. You can order this stuff online at Funagain games also, if its not available in your area.

My recommendations:

1.) Trivial Puruit. C'mon, this game is a classic. It's not fun if you're the only one who can answer any questions, though.

2.) Clue. Very easy to win this game, especially if you are playing with someone who has >some< kind of ego. Just do everything you can to convince him/her that they are the murderer. It will probably be their natural instinct anyway (to think of themselves first).

3.) Risk. I would recommend using the 'secret mission' goals, which are drawn randomly. Very easy to win as long as no one knows what your mission is. Consequently, try to get one where you must eliminate another player. Everyone else will assume you are trying to conquer territories (if you fake it properly), until one of them dies, at which point you can declare yourself the winner.

I don't care if I win or lose at boardgames, but when luck is minimalized it's really hard not to try. :)

Salutations,

Thank you, everyone (even the guy who still suggested Axis&Allies).

I will take a list with me to the lgs.

Has anyone tried The Hills Rise Wild?
