[OT] Board Game suggestions?

Wiz-War kicks ass. I have had my Jolly Games edtion since 1986. It rocks. Though may be hard to find. I think its out of print

Titan, from Avalon Hill. Man, You get to play a demigod, raising armies of monsters, to destroy your fellow demigod. Only takes about 12 hours to play. Sadly, this is also out of print. Our good friend Hasbro bought up Avalon hill, and hasn't put Titan back out.

Tailsman, 2nd edtion- also a great game for D&Ders. Though this is also out of print.

Heroes Quest- great game, Visual D&D, out of print

Dungeon Quest, from Games Workshop- game about entering a dungeon, looking for the dragons lair, and getting back out. Game is different, dungeon layout is made randomly with tiles. Also, out of print.

Hmm.....How about, 4 man chess?

I'll second both Wiz-War and Risk 2210. If you like Risk at all, try this new one. It has an interesting new feel.

Puerto Rico is a pretty cool game as well, another of the German games.

I love Titan, but since I moved east I've had a hell of a time finding anyone to play with.

And Axis is a very well balanced game. It's abstract enough that it's just a big war game, and very cool.

PS

Some games mentioned I consider "drinking games"; you'll have much more fun if you are buzzed while playing. ;-)

DungeonQuest: I personally love DungeonQuest. So do some of my friends. Others hate it with a passion. Why? Because you die. A lot. Randomly. I think thats funny and very in character for a bunch of adventurers raiding a dangerous dragons lair. People who hate it say "Theres no strategy in this game. You just die." I think they're just bitter because they always fall in the bottomless pit on the first turn. At least the game is quick, so you dont have the problem of the people who get eliminated having to wait hours to play again. But be warned - love it or hate it - about 50/50.

Talisman: Talisman is cute, but it has some serious game design problems. It also takes forever to play with more than about 4 people. All of the expansions suck horribily and must be shunned. Anyway, the biggest design problem is that its almost impossible to kill other powerful characters even if you get to the Crown of Command. This means that there is no end-game; the game just keeps going on and on, stuck in a loop like this: "I curse you from the Crown of Command. You lose a life." "I use my evil Sword to kill a monster. I gain a life." People started asking questions like "Can I come down from the Crown of Command? I'm not very effective up here."

Fluxx: People who say that there is no strategy to DungeonQuest would hate this game. Its a quick card playing game, where the objectives change so rapidly that it is not actually possible to have a strategy. Its built around an interesting mechanic, but, seriously, you cant do anything to influence whether you win or lose. The game just goes around, changing and re-changing until someone stumbles into a win. Its funny about twice (perhaps more if you are buzzed. ;-)

Has anyone tried The Hills Rise Wild?

I was just going to suggest that game, with the caveat that I haven't actually played it yet. But I'm an HPL nut, so it looks like fun to me.

There's also Cults Across America.

My wife and I have also really enjoyed the National Enquirer game. It's probably not in print anymore--but you get pictures and words and have to make up the most outrageous headlines. Might be even funnier since the pictures are about 10 years out of date (Gorbachev, etc.)

Years ago, we used to play Milles Bourne. It's not a board game, but a card game where you race across France, accumulating miles. Coup Forre!

These are just the kind of games that appeal to me--I may be twisted. :D

You could go the cheap route. I mean *cheapass* route. :D

They don't exactly have cheapass games in most department stores, but you could pick up 3+ games for the same price as a regular board game. More variety!

Fun games. Most of them are short, like 30 min. to an hour, or slightly longer.

I just started getting into them. Kill Doctor Lucky is good, for one.

No, I don't work for cheapass games. :p

Board games that we mostly play that our good.

Settlers of Catan with the ships&sea (whatever its called) expansion.

Starfarers of Catan with expansion

Axis and Allies with World at War expansion (AA rocks with this expansion. Soooo much better than the orginal, and I love the orginal).

Mammoth, newer game, pretty good.

Titan

Any of the train games are fun, Eurorails, British Rails, etc.

The Lord of the Rings boardgame that came out recently is pretty sweet.

And find a card game called Family Business. It's the best. :) Mob wars at their finest (?). :)

Settlers of Catan takes maybe 10 minutes to learn. Playing time is about hour to hour and a half. The best expansion for it is Cities and Knights. Game has good replay value, too. These are for 3 or 4 players only, although there are expansions for 5 or 6 players.
