[OT] Calling all English-speaking gaming groups...

First of all, thanks Ashwyn for keeping the thread bumped!! :D

To answer a few questions:

Capellan, could you look into the shipping costs? I can stick some International Reply Coupons in the mail, that would probably be the best way.

Agamon, I can't really play MP3s on the uni computers (and don't have a Zip to transfer the files), but if it's not too expensive for you to burn it onto CD that would be great! Are you in the US, and does anyone know if CD formats are the same internationally?

7thlvlDM, if I get the go-ahead, any time in the next 4 or 5 weeks should be fine. If I at least have some data to show to my tutor by then I can add more data as I get it!

Kilmore, my old group used to game in the pub. I much prefer gaming at someone's house or flat though...

Lastly, it's been mentioned to me that this might turn out to be better material for a dissertation rather than this project. If that happens, I won't be doing the dissertation till next (academic) year, but I'd still be interested in getting data. And for a dissertation I'll need lots of it...

Thanks everyone for your interest! I'll be speaking to my tutor tomorrow, so expect the yea-or-nay within 24 hours!

:D

randomling,

I'm not involved in a campaign, so I can't help with the recording but I thought you might want to check out
Fantasy Role-Playing Games: A New Performing Art. It's an academic study of RPG's. It's not exactly linguistics; it's mostly semiotics. It would be interesting to see if your empirical observations match his theoretical expectations.

You can get it from the publisher and from Amazon.

Hope that helps.

This is rampant discrimination against Swahili-speaking gaming groups! I demand that they be included in this research!

You wanna record the data, and do me a full transcription and an English translation? If so, be my guest..... :D

I don't speak Swahili. It's not just a case of not understanding the words -- I wouldn't recognize the difference between what's a word, and what's half a word, or a random sound of hesitation....

Osis: cool!

And yeah, don't edit your language use for me. I want natural data, so if you normally use expletives when you game, use expletives in the game you record.

Seaong -- I'm thinking about looking at RPGs in general rather than just D&D, so that's fine! Thank you!
Okay. I'll check with everyone and see who has a tape recorder :). Are you looking for just one session?
Oh, and that's another thing: research ethics say that I must have informed consent from all participants, so no taping your players in secret! :D If my tutor gives me the go-ahead I'll probably draw up a release form or similar.
No worries.
