OT - Console Game Systems

If you don't already have a DVD player avoid the Gamecube, as that can't double as a DVD player.

Other than that I won't comment as I don't own any of them. I believe the PS2 is backward compable which is a plus if you have a collection of Playstation games.

X-Box is Bill Gates baby and has delayed the release of Halo on the PC so I won't buy it for that reason.

Buy whichever system has the games that you really want to play. If everything you like is multi-platform, get an Xbox, as it's the most powerful system and is a significantly better DVD player.

Of course, I've got a PS2 and an Xbox, and I'll likely get a GameCube next year...

As far as technical specs, here's a website that gives you comparisons of all the consoles out there:

XBox undoubtedly has the potential for better graphics and smoother gameplay, and if you play any games made specifically for it, you'll see what I mean. However, PS2 has a few years under their belt and developers still make the most games for the company that has the biggest fanbase. XBox's games are getting more numerous, however, and for the same price as a PS2, I believe it's a better deal.

Here's an exclusive game scheduled to be released next year that I think would go over very well with the people on these boards:

Gamecube is out of the question. I feel somewhat sorry for Nintendo, but the cube just doesn't have the superior power of the Xbox or the superior games of the PS2. I guess it can be good for kids who actually like playing Mario.

The Xbox, apart from being Microsoft which is a minus on its own, has a fairly superior computing power and a hard drive. The hard drive however is being used in such a limited way that it's hardly better than memory cards. Ask Morrowind players about this, Bethesda is trying as hard as they can to get an expansion or plugins for the Xbox version of Morrowind, and they just can't.
The Xbox does have a better hardware - so much indeed that Microsoft loses money selling it - but I just don't find any of the games that are currently out particularly exciting, save those that are also out for PC. Note that since the Xbox is so similar to a PC, it is fairly likely that many of the games out for Xbox will eventually be out for PC as well (Halo).
You need to buy a separate remote controller to use the DVD player, and the controller is too big in many's opinion.
Ultimately, there just aren't enough good titles around to buy me on the Xbox, and those that I can find interesting I either can play on PC (Morrowind, eventually Halo) or can find equivalents on the PS2 (any fighting game). The only reason I can see now for buying an Xbox is for putting a mod chip, a keyboard and mouse on it, installing Linux, and thus getting a fairly good and extremely cheap computer (and damaging Microsoft in the process, wow!) ;)

The PS2 is less powerful than the Xbox but (the following sentence is IMHO, ok?) if it's fun you're looking for, as opposed to polygons, it's the deal. There are an incredible number of games, plus Playstation ones, and many, many of them are very good. They have originality (which really lacks in most Xbox games that I know of), playability, plot, and since a lot of people has the PS2 you can sell them after you're done with them.
The graphics are currently slightly below Xbox games, but I expect them to get significantly better as programmers get more experienced on using it (as happened with the PS1). OTOH, I can't see the Xbox's graphics getting much better for this reason, because it uses the well-known and used DirectX APIs and is probably already well exploited. But even if I knew that the relative quality would stay the same, I'd go PS2 all the same for the reasons mentioned.
The huge fan base (an order of magnitude more than either of the other consoles) ensures that many quality games will be made for a long time. The DVD player is there, no separate stuff to buy.

An additional note:
People say that the Xbox plays DVDs better but I sincerely don't know how so. Is the image better? Is the movement more fluid? Is it more user-friendly?

Have you heard anything about that Australian guy who was selling/making xbox mod chips that allowed the xbox to play PS2 games? Freaked microsoft out, as well it should I suppose.

Whoa! That seems too weird to be true, such a mod chip would take months if not years to develop. It's basically a PS2 emulator - in hardware, to boot. Nah, I don't believe it. It probably can be made, but it would be very hard and costly, and take more time than what the Xbox has been out for.

It would be sweet, since Microsoft makes money on the games sold rather than the consoles sold. :D

Having played the 3 consoles (I only have a PS2 at home) I need to say get all 3 :)

There are good games on each platform. You gotta consider the fact that there are also excluive games (Metroid anyone ?) on each consoles.

As for the Xbox controller being too big they released a smaller model.

The buttons on the GC controller are a bit weird but you get used to it pretty fast.

The Xbox is so freaking big. It look like a VCR from 15 years ago :)

The Cube is very small. The memory card is a bit small compared to the PS2 one.

If I can save some money, I will get a Cube mostly for Eternal Darkness. A Lovecraftish game is too good to pass :)

If i would ever buy a console again, I'd get a Playstation 2, just for the Final Fantasy games. However, as a long time Nintendo fan, it hurts abit to say that. :)

This is not true and it seems you have bent the truth quite a bit.

What is going on in Australia - is that the government ruled that mod chips are legal - thus Microsoft is quite peeved - because this means you can pirate games quite easily for the Xbox. With very few 3rd party developers and MS basically trying to make money off the software (aka games) this can hit them pretty hard. Sony's not too worried, as the mod chps have and always will exist and their pockets are deeper than MS. They don't see it as an issue, while MS does.

I'd swear I posted here yesterday about the consoles. Anyway - my opinion is that you need to look at who is going to be playing the console and what kinds of games they will be playing. Kids tend towards the GameCube - as it is full of cute kid games like the Mario series. Xbox seems to appeal more to PC gamers who want a console. PS2 is good all around. I have a PS2 and I find that the best variety of games is on the PS2. Xbox seems too unoriginal and PC like in my opinion.

If you like console RPG's by the way - PS2 is the way to go, from FInal Fantasy to Kingdom Hearts, Gauntlet Dark Legacy to Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance it is AMAZING for these.

I'm totally hooked on Kingdom Hearts and can't wait to get GTA Vice CIty - which is an RPG/Action game of sorts.

Yes, innovative and fun games galore on PS2!
