Not to get political, but I would cheerfully disagree. In college, I spent two years teaching English in the lap of luxury in a so-called Third World country. People were tough, and the tough thrived, the weak were forced to toughen up, or be cast by the wayside, there was no coddling.

In our society, the weak and feeble get a lot more breaks, and people get softer and whinier. The clever and manipulative exploit the weak and feeble, often benefitting from their limitations. Petty laws are made and enforced because of the actions of the inept and weak-minded.
