OT: Do you hate Telemarketters as much as I do?

No I don't

I have to ask do you guys actually receive so many telemarketing calls that it Really screws up your life? Where I live (Southern Maine) I get maybe 1 call a day, and all I do is ask to take a message. I lose maybe 30 seconds just not enough to turn me into a jerk. And an added benefit if its not telemarketer there will be a message so I can determine if its important or not.

Oh and sometimes you have to take the first job you get, last time I got laid off there were a few hundred others laid off in my area at the same time, after over a hundred applications and resumes I was forced to take a the only job offered.

On a side note alot of debt collecters use the same computerized calling system as telemarketers, so not answering the phone when its an unknown caller can hurt you. Thats why I ask to take a message, debt collectors will leave a number.

So back to my original question how many times a day do you people actually get called that you hate that much.

Well, for the record, I just got done with the second one today. It's 1:45 here.

I have days where I only get one, but normaly it's from 2-4 a day.

If they call you back after you asked them not to you can sue the company they work for.

R-i-i-i-ght. We're jerks for prefering to be nasty to the telemarketer, which takes about a minute, feels rewarding, and causes no real trouble for them rather than sueing their company, which would take months and a lot of money and might result in them getting fired.

And for the record... They (in my me and my families experience) have a HORRID track record for actualy removing you when you ask.

And that only works untill the NEXT time they buy a new list of numbers, anyhow, it seems, because even when we get a group to stop calling, it starts up again a month or two later.

That's a silly justification. If you're willing to constantly annoy people by calling them up at their own private homes and trying to sell them stuff just to make a little more dough, you deserve disrespect.

Of course, paying bills, feeding yourself and in some cases family is such a horrid thing deserving of disrespect. The difference between $6 an hour, and ~$8 is rather significant and can make a big impact on your quality of life.

Come on, you think they take the money and just look at the extra $2/hour? Yes, lets all slam the guy who works two jobs so he can pay off his debts and can send his kids to a nice college, or the kid who works his own way through college.

If you're that desperate, and you can't find any other jobs, than you can afford to take a little verbal abuse from me.

Thems the laws, if you want companies to follow the laws then you make it hurt when they don’t, in this case they loose enough money and they’ll make sure to tell the employees what the laws are and that they need to follow them.

You are childish and immature when you sit there an abuse a telemarketer for simply doing their job. Anyway, my main contention is not that people toy with telemarketers, but the assertion that they are somehow lesser people because they don’t have a job that you approve of.

People have essentially called some of my Family and Friends scum, how do you expect me to react? I know them better then you do, one would think I'd be better qualified to judge just what kind of people they are.

Go ahead, be immature and childish and toy with the person on the other line, complain about how annoying they are, I'll even agree with you on that one, but sit there and tell me that my dear friends and family are the scum of society? I'm not gonna just sit there with a stupid grin on my face.

Ah yes, somebody working through college is a money-hungry jerk.

I would not suggest a telemarketer is a money-hungry jerk, but I do think there are better ways to make money.

And to argue with the "working through college" argument-

Not only did I work through college, but I worked through middle and high school. If I wanted new clothes and sometimes even food, then I had to work hard and contribute to the family.

I took lots of crappy, disgusting, and back-breaking jobs- however, I always had the self-respect I was earning my dollar by good honest work. None of my work intruded upon the lives of other people.

"Working through college" is no excuse.

Ah, of course if they are down on their luck, strung out lets help them out by making their job harder, such humanity and charity.

Way to claim the moral high ground there, "They're down, lets kick them!"

While such isn't the case with all telemarketers, your level proclamation that people who are down deserve to be kicked is chilling.

You refuse to get it- don't you?

I don't approve of a strippers or people who sell alcohol, but neither of them get in my face.

Daily.

Multiple times.

Through a means I have to pay for by necessity of modern living.

It is not a matter of approval- it is a matter of intrusion.

People have essentially called some of my Family and Friends scum, how do you expect me to react?

How you react emotionally is pointless.

If I had a family or friend who felt they "needed" to be a telemarketer to get by, then I would do my best to get them a better a job and offer to help them with their financial needs.
