[OT] Favorite Band?

This is something that is usually underestimated about Mike Oldfield. He really was a flash progressive rock guitar player (the equal or better of Alex Lifeson, Andy Latimer, Steve Hackett, etc), and most people aware of him assume he's just another keyboardy new age guy like Yanni. It dosn't help that the so called Mike Oldfield Single (i.e. the part of Tubular Bells used in the exorcist) is the most familiar piece of his work.

Woo! Someone else here is aware of him in more than an oh-he-did-the-exorcist-theme way! :D He doesn't get a lot of recognition even though he kept cranking (mostly) quality stuff out basically every year since then... Coincidentally, most of his stuff makes *excellent* gaming background music. Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn, Incantations, Guitars, Voyager, Songs of Distant Earth... my group let Tr3s Lunas loop 3 times before they took it out, and that was just because we were all getting sick of 'To Be Free' after the 6th time. ;)

ahh, my other geeky obsession

Recent Band: The Strokes

Last 5-odd Years: Radiohead

Ever (Still Recording Category): U2. Seen 'em 4 times now, and they get better every time.

Ever (Dearly Departed Category): The Clash. Still the only band that matters.

Honorable Mention: Cake. Seen them three times AND I got trampled and nearly killed at one of their shows AND I got them to play my favorite song when John McCrea was taking requests from the audience. How do I afford my rock and roll lifestyle?

Oh, and corporate rock still sucks.

Lotsa industrial fans here. Although I already answered this thread (way back on page 1), here's what my favorite bands were when I was in my college / industrial phase (note I still listen to a lot of these, just not religiously).

Skinny Puppy
Acumen
Aphex Twin
Pig
KMFDM / MDFMK
Front 242
Front Line Assembly
Mentallo & The Fixer
Covenant
Apoptygma Berzerk
Decoded Feedback
Snog

And then a bunch of more ambient stuff like Orbital, Orb, Soma etc.

There is of course the greatest band ever:

Queen:D

After that in no particular order are

The Police, The Cars, Chicago, Styx, Genesis, Billy Idol, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Beethoven, Bach, Handel.

Of course no one comes close to Queen. No one.

Hey Cool! Neat to see Marco and Yone made the list :) I used to hang out and go clubbing with them all the time... even jammed and did the lighting at their concert before..

nine inch nails did not hit the mainstream. the mainstream came to them. the downward spiral had appeal to the masses. and that has nothing at all to do with the artist trying to appease these masses. that does not deflate the worth of the music. the music is still outstanding. to say you will only listen to nin if it is not 'mainstream' is one of the most pretentious things i have heard in a while. sadly it is something i hear far too often from my 'industrial' friends and cohorts.

listen to something because you like it. not because everyone else does, or doesn't.

listen the fragile. 23 tracks of great music. it goes farther then anything reznor has previously done. i really think that it will go down as one of the finest albums ever.

Well I happen to disagree on the first comment.. it became a matter of how much angst and swearing can I put into the songs because the kids just dig it. Thus the birth of "Marilyn Manson Kids". But that is just my opinion and obviously other's too. However if you re-read my comment that you took as pretension, I never said I would only listen to nin if it is not in the mainstream, I said

And the sooner that happens, the sooner I might start listening to NIN again. When they hit the "mainstream" it was effin downhill from there.

In other words, if the music changes to a degree where I feel it has regained its spark (and that almost always means it has fallen from the position of being in the same CD collection as Brittany Spears fans) then I "might" start listening to NIN again. Of course, I was probably also not clear in my post, but from time to time I still listen to Pretty Hate Machine and the Broken and Fixed Cds as well. I think you misunderstood my post a little, and I didn't help by being vague :)

(I have never heard of the Might be Giants (that id the name is'nt it), are they an amrican grupo, what kind of music?)

They Might Be Giants, they are from the US (NYC to be exat) and it's not surprising you haven't heard of them since they aren't even all that big over here (relatively speaking).

This is their official website. This is their news and information site.

Oh and everyone should go here and listen to the Arrogant Worms (except the Christmas songs). Feel the Canadian goodness! Experience the hilarity!

you really should give the 23 track opus, the fragile a try. it is solid. and as far as the mtv generation liking it, they hated it. so give it a go. i think you may well like it.

broken and fixed are incredible. and nothing bad can be said about pretty hate machine. one of the best albums of 1989.

and if i insulted or offended you, i apologize.

as far as manson, i try to pretend that the band never ever existed. it makes my life easier. :D
