[OT] FOTR to be bigger, bolder on DVD

Just found this on the Associated Press wire:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Middle–earth is getting bigger and bolder on home video.

The theatrical version of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” debuts on video Aug. 6, followed Nov. 12 by an extended edition that will add about 30 minutes to the three-hour film.

The theatrical release was rated PG–13, but distributor New Line said Tuesday the extended version probably would be explicit enough to carry an R rating.

The August DVD release will come in a two–disc set with two hours of bonus material, including a 10-minute sneak preview of the second chapter in the film trilogy, “The Two Towers,” due in theaters Dec. 18.

The longer version of “Fellowship of the Ring” will come in a four–disc set with six hours of extra material, including behind–the–scenes looks at how director Peter Jackson recreated J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythical land of hobbits, elves and wizards.

Jackson shot all three films simultaneously. Part three, “The Return of the King,” hits theaters around Christmas 2003.

I think the tactic of making use wait for the bigger version (thus trying to get people to buy both) is kind of annoying, but other than that, wow!

What I heard was that they originally intended to do 3 four hour movies but then found out that theatres were balking at the four hour time saying they wouldn't be able to show it enough times to make a profit. So that why they are going to put the editted parts back in when in comes out on DVD .

They apparently are going to do the same thing with movies 2 &3.

Thanks for posting that update, Shadowdancer.

As annoying as the delay is, I'll buy it twice. I loved this movie! And I don't like most fantasy films; they often seem silly.

Finally, it will be mine. My preciousssssssssss!

Now, I just gotta buy a big-ass wide-screen TV before August (or at least before November).

I don't like the idea of buying it twice within a year either. But I don't think I can wait until the end of the year for the 4 disc set so I will end up buying both :D

The way it's been pitched to me (and details are still muddy at this point) - if you buy the "regular" 2-disc set in August, you'll possibly be able to mail away for the 3rd bonus disc that's included with the 4-disc deluxe set. Of course, you won't have the extra half hour, but you'll have everything else.

They're still working out the details.

The other thing that I was shown was a possible mock-up of the Collector's Edition - it's big! It came with bookends. So, it'll be more than just another 2 DVDs slipped into the case - it's all new packaging, and it's a hefty size.

For God Sakes people, show some strength. Rent the damned movie in Aug. and buy it in November. Don't buy the hype of two seperate releases, you will find it will become more prevelant and you will be spending $80 for all of your favorite movies.

OT. Does anyone care about how I made the movies stuff on DVDs or documentaries on them? Bloopers, how lame can you get.

I like the director notes over the soundtrack, but that is about it.

Extremely silly as to how they edited out the full gifting scene in Lothlorien, only to put it in the DVD set...IMO, it was a very important part of the book/movie, and it very likely only took up an extra 5mins or so in the movie. Absurd.

"Gifting scene ... as the Fellowship leaves, Galadriel gives them each a personalized gift that will end up being critical to their future. Legolas gets a special bow, Sam gets some elvin rope that comes in handy when he faces a giant spider in The Two Towers, and a touching moment between Gimli and Galadriel."
Critical to their future...Galadriel and Gimli...essentially a major character change for the dwarf...HOW COULD YOU EDIT THAT?!

Editing that scene just to put it in the extended version was done to get more people to buy the extended DVD!!

Sorry folks, but I really liked the gifting scene in the book, and had a feeling it was edited, and that is just infuriating to me :(

Needless to say, I am buying/renting the extended DVD... ;) I just hope having to watch the additional shire bit (with the musical piece) will be enjoyable, and the other added stuff will make it worthwhile. Damn marketing strategies =/ *sigh*

CamelToe, you are right, we need strength to resist this double release phenomenon. You asked the question does anybody like the extra stuff? Well I love the extra stuff and is one of the reasons why I love the DVD format. Episode 1 is great becuase you get to see all the different aspects of the film process, the fights the making of the film score, history, casting etc I especially love bloopers! I just wish that you could add the deleted scenes into the film like in X-Men
