[OT] FOTR to be bigger, bolder on DVD

Be sure to follow the links and read the full content. Just so we're all on the same page, the 2 releases are different edits of the film. So, buy the one you want (or buy both).

From The Digital Bits:

Also, just to clarify, each DVD version includes a SEPARATE edit of the film. The 4-disc special extended set DOES NOT include the theatrical cut of the film on a separate disc or via seamless branching. If you want the theatrical cut, you have to buy the August 2-disc set. If you want the longer cut, you buy the November 4-disc edition. If you want both, save your money accordingly and buy both.

As for extras, they're nice, but my favorites are the audio commentary tracks. You learn all sorts of neat stuff when the director (or actor or producer or whoever) provides running commentary as they watch the film.

Oh, also, one last thought:

This will work for a few mega-blockbusters, like Lotr. But if studios try to do this with every film they release on DVD, it won't work.

Yeah, I'm gonna buy two different DVD sets of What Women Want or Behind Enemy Lines..... :D

Here is another thought. It's been said before that the new scenes are crucial to the next movie. These are the scenes in the November release, one month before the second film. They may only want to release the November version but the rental stores wan't to cash in on the movie so they wan't their usual 6 month release time. Then again, another slant on the august release is that alot of people who saw the films had not read the books or have not read them for a long time so they didn't even notice so they like it how it is. So some people will like the normal version and some people will like the extended version. How about this - They want to make the final edit as good as possible so they release the cinema version just so people can get it without having to wait almost util the next film comes out so they have more time to make it right. This way the extended version will be fresh in everyones minds so they realise what is different becuase they have seen the cinema version so many times they know it backwards. Just like the Star Wars Special Editions, who picked out every new scene because they knew the old one's so well? I did, and wasn't it almost like seeing a new film, with all of the excitement of seeing it the first time. Monte Cook's rant about why books are better than films is well worth a read...

Two ideas for those complaining about having to choose between buying two versions of the DVD. When the first version comes out, rent the DVD and tape it on a VHS tape. Then watch the tape until the second DVD comes out, and buy it.

Or

Buy the first DVD when it comes out in August. Put the second DVD, which comes out in November, on your Christmas list and let someone give it to you as a gift.

At least they have to goodwill to tell us about the later release. How many would they sell if they released the 2 disc in August and then announced the 4 disc. They put the choice in our hands.
