[OT] How much protein is in Tuna water?

What else is he nuts over? My dogs pretty much vaccuum everything that's ever been offered to them with the sole exception of bananas and sugar-free blackberry preserves. Try, oh I dunno, salad dressing. Bleu Cheese. Some juice off of peaches or pears. (Unless of course that also interferes with the special food). Just dope it enough so that he thinks he's getting a treat. Alternately (this works for mine) pretend like you're sneaking it to him off your dinner plate. My Jack Russell Terrier would eat fire if she thought I was having some as well.

Also, if you strain the water (through cheesecloth or better yet, a coffee filter,) you should be able to get some of what protein *is* there out.

Protein molecules are much, much smaller than the spacing between filaments in cheescloth or coffee filters. You may be able to strain out smaller bits of fish, but any protein dissolved in the fluid will go right on through.

krunchyfrogg, I hope your dog recovers. 15 is pretty old, of course, but I hope he has many more years of happy togetherness with you.

Good for you for taking such good care of him.

Thanks a lot. I just love my dog Buddy with all my heart, but when I step back and look at the whole picture, I should just be glad that he's been around for 15 years. :)

Umbran: Please e-mail me. I have to ask you something, but your e-mail address is not accessable. Thanks.

Amen. Every day we get in the company of those we love is a gift.

If your worried about protein in the water you could boil the water for say 5-6 minutes.. that should destroy the protein although it will probably ruin the taste...

Well, now that I think about it.. it only might destroy the protein.. hmm

well, this was a bit of a useless post, wasn't it?

Well, first off, canned tuna is already cooked, so such boiling wouldn't do anything that hasn't already been done.

Boiling will not destroy the protein any more than boiling an egg destroys the protein there. Boiling, or any other form of cooking, denatures proteins. In essence, they get bent and twisted out of shape, but are in many ways chemically still the same molecules. A bit easier to digest, but still a hazard to ailing kidneys.

i was pretty sure that cheese was really bad for dogs, but regardless cheese has lots of protein. well, maybe not comapred to tuna, but still.

Color me stupid. I thought briefly that cheese was fat, not protein. Never mind.

Cheese has goodly doses of both fats and proteins in it. A quick look in my fridge yields the following...

Cheddar - 36% fat, 21% protein
Mozzarella - 17% fat, 27% protein
Mont. Jack - 32% fat, 25% protein
American - 29% fat, 19% protein
