Darn...

If plan B falls through, I'll take up ThomasBJJ's offer as plan C, I think. Let someone else do all the legwork, and offer me the chance of getting rid of it all. :)
Darn... there goes my chance to pick up all the back issues of Dungeon I wish I had kept... oh well. ;) Good luck to ya both... if you and Thomas are willing, I'd love to buy the lot of 'em but I guess it's up to you two. I just hate to have to keep track of 'em all on e-bay.

I live in Orange County, CA so a trip up to LA to grab them from Thomas is certainly within my means... saves him the trouble of having to package 'em all, too. If I could, I'd go to Napa myself, but have a couple of weddings and birthdays in the family (two on my side, one on my wife's side) this week and next that I would be executed for not showing up for - a drive to LA I can slip in, a drive to Napa I can't. :(

If you are forced to go to Plan C, I would be quite appreciative if you would consider selling off at least the Dungeon Mags to me in a lot. If not, hey, I understand. :)

Keep in mind, I haven't heard back from Plan B yet. I'll give him until Friday to respond, then start on Plan C.

At that point, I'll post here, and you can contact Thomas and work something out.

If you have to...

Okay, plan B fell through. On to plan C. (If plan C fails, I might just see if I can find someone local, and FORCE the darn collection on them....)
If you have to FORCE the darn collection on someone (I presume it will be a "here, take it, it's free"), hey, I'll pay for all the shipping costs... just slap labels on it and ship it on down this way. ;)

Plan D

I think the Plan C offer you got is a good one, and I would encourage you to try your best to go with that one.

If that plan falls through, I would be willing to make almost the exact same offer to you: I will travel to you in Napa from LA with a truck, haul it all down here to LA, and sell it on E-Bay. However, I would do it for 50% of the profits (since I think that is more standard, hence my saying the Plan C offer was a good one).

My best friend has been doing something very similar to this over the past two years, and it has been slow but successful. I have the digital camera to snap pictures of the items I wouldl be selling for you, the paypal account (and likely Billpoint) available, and all that jazz. And I'm an attorney with quite a bit of experience with escrow accounts, if that seems to be a route that makes sense.

So there you go, Plan D.

Honestly, it sounds like an aweful lot of trouble for something that may or may not return an investment for you.

Let's be real here - you're likely not going to pay off a car or your student loans on your gaming collection. If there is money to be had, it will be in those few very rare and collectable items - those are worth hawking on EBay.

The rest, well, there are plenty of used book stores all over, and some game stores take in credit. Honestly, and no offense to those involved in offering, I wouldn't feel too comfortable handing my collection over for someone else to sell for me.

I can't imagine anyone buying the whole lot sight unseen. Bundles of related gear, maybe, but going the auction route for your high ticket items and then either unloading the rest for minimal $$$ or just outright keeping it would be the way I'd go, if I could bear to part with any of my games...

Let me guess, you have never sold D&D stuff on ebay, right?

I think you underestimate the market right now for older D&D products on e-bay. They will sell. A used book store would give you almost nothing. Ebay will, eventually, with diligence, result in the sale of virtually the entire collection, for a fairly decent price overall.

As for not feeling comfortable, I don't understand your concerns. You draw up a contract. It's perfectly enforceable. This is how almost all business is done. In my case, I'm an attorney, and if I didn't follow through with my end of the deal, well, it's not too hard to report me to the bar. If you are unable to trust someone to sell something for you, well, I hope are independently wealthy, because virtually all business relies on someone else to sell your products or services to some extent.

I'm definitely writing up a sorta contract, though I diddly/squat about law. Pretty much, just codifying terms.

What stuff should be in it? I figure things like, "What if the person selling for me wants to buy something for himself," and "What if there is damage to items in his custody," and stuff like that.

After I finish my final next Monday (and after I've had a chance to work on some minor papers over the weekend), I'm going to start cataloging what's in each box. That way, I can keep track of what's there. This should easily take a while. :)

ThomasBJJ is on the road right now, but he's gonna keep in touch via library internet connections. Definitely, Plan D is Mistwell's. Plan E will be Titan Games, though I REALLY hope to avoid that.

And knowing Thomas (which I do), I can guarantee that he's going to want to snap up some of the choice items to fill his collection (and give you proper recompense for it, of course). In fact, I'm sure that was one of his main reasons for doing this.

And I can also pretty much guarantee that it'll be safe in his custody. Both he and his roommates are upright guys, and I game with them weekly.
