[ot] Ice or heat?

Well...

I knew this was going to happen. I tweaked my ankle doing.. well.. I don't know.. I just realized it hurts when I walk. (Not like screaming in pain hurt, just kinda "ow ow ow that hurts" kinda hurt).

So, what's better? heating it or icing it?

Ice will reduce the swelling, if any, heat will relax the muscles & joint to reduce some of the pain. If there's swelling, ice it first. If no swelling, then try heat.

I think the current wisdom for general light joint injury is to use both ice and heat in alternation. 20 minutes of cold, followed by 20 minutes of heat.

I had the same problem once and my mother told me to ice it but that I ought to see a doctor, just to be safe. When I got to the doctor he told me to use heat. I was surprised and told him, "My mother thought I should ice it." To which the doctor replied, "My mother always says use heat..." :p

RICE method for two days...

Rest

Ice

Compression

Elevation

If after two days there is not an improvment, see a doctor.

Well, I wish I could rest but I can't.

I have to continue working out for a PT test on friday... I have a 2 mile run I've got to be ready for (new personal record for me today! 17:14)

My ankle doesn't hurt when I'm running, just when I stop.

DO NOT RUN ON IT!!!

minor injuries can turn major if you ignore them...you can seriously agitate that ankle and cause permanent injury. I dont think running the mile right now is worth pain for life.....wait on the mile . RICE is your best bet....if you value being an athlete it is worth waiting a day or two.

I found a container of tiger balm..

Mmmm, good for headaches too. Except for the really strong kind cause it burns my skin.
I totally feel for ya DerianCypher. I have bad knees and I dislocated my left one about two weeks ago (bent it under me to sit on the couch... knees really don't bend sideways :( ). It hurt like crazy so I iced it and slathered on CapzasinP repeatedly. Then today, I was running around getting ready and I tweaked it again (all of me turned right, except my lower left leg... knees don't spin around either ;)) so I iced it again. Guess what I'm asking for for Xmas. ;)
Oh, I usually use heat when my muscles and joints are stiff or sore and ice when I originally injure something.
