Because in our world: Magic don't work, Clerics/Paladins just molest young boys, Fighters/Barbarians would get arrested for running around with swords in the street, Rogues are called "criminals" end in raped in prison, Druids are all hippie freaks, and Rangers are get paid like $19k a year to wander around national parks.

But a monk.. a monk could still kick very much arse.

I'm the spitting image of a wizard. All other hard core science and math geeks are the same, and you know it. Characteristics:

CHA: The dump stat, obviously. Geeks are rarely charismatic, socially reclusive, haven't a hope at bagging that cheerleader like the Bard can, and probably forgot to take a shower during the entire exam period.
INT: Usually pretty high. Duh.
WIS: Damn low most of the time. subjectively speaking. That litmus test that states that those with INT know what the rain is and those with WIS know to stay out of the rain applies very well to us.
STR: Low again. I'm a beanpole.
CON: Fairly low. See STR.
DEX: Varies. I can juggle and stuff.

Skills: highly geared towards knowledge of the natural universe.

Except for a slightly higher strength and a focus on Engineering rather than natural science, this is me all over.

Granted, I'd more accurately qualify as an Expert, but...

I'd start off as a commoner (wouldn't we all?!)

Then I'd take a level (maybe two) of wizard, since I'm fairly intelligent. But, I'd sluff it off, since I'm kind of lazy, and I don't particularly like math, which I think magic would probably have a lot of. So, failing that, I'd probably switch majors to cleric, since I like to think of myself as being fairly wise (how does one measure that, anyway), and despite not being religious at all, I could be fairly pious if I found the right cult.

I like to proselatyze(sp) a lot, too. So, that would help.
