[OT] Internet Piracy (Looking for Information)

Oni

First Post
First, let me apologize if I am pushing my luck with this thread.

Here's the deal, I have to give a speech for my Speech class and my topic is internet piracy. So I have come to once more call on the vast knowledge of the ENworld posters. I'm hoping that you guys could point me toward various resources dealing with arguments from all sides of the internet piracy debate. Please, please, please do not debate in this thread, I don't want it to be locked before I can get some good information from you. Please just post links to whatever internet resources you might know of on the matter, or suggest other resources.

Thankyou for your help!

If memory serves, there was a thread with quite a bit of discussion on the topic that eventually (surprise) got locked about a month or so back - perhaps one of those with the search ability would be kind enough to locate it.

What kinds of info are you looking for Oni? Are you looking for a quantification of loss on the part of publishers? The moral/ethical arguments presented by either side? I think if you're a little more specific you might get better help.

The Business Software Alliance seems to handle quite a bit of information on Internet Piracy.

Their Web page is fairly obvious at http://www.bsa.org

I'm quite sure that they would be happy to give you any and all information that you need for your presentation if you fire off a quick e-mail to them. Or, if you don't have that much time to spare because you've been procrastinating and the speech is due in about 12 hours, you could always just surf their site looking for information, they seem to have a fair amount of good quality propaganda sitting around.

The first time I ever heard of BAS was the instance where they called up the SysAdmin at my place of business and informed him that such and such IP addresses were transmitting illegal software and could he kindly remove said offending information.

(Yeah, one of the IP addresses was mine, but it was actually a co-worker coming up here at night and abusing our T1 for file sharing.)

I'm interested in both the hard data, as well as the moral/ethical side of things.

Carlton Vogt is a columnist for Infoworld.com, who discusses ethical issues. He devoted a number of columns to this subject, but I think they're no longer posted. I have attached a link to one column that discusses the concept of "blaming the victim", which may have some application to your subject (basically, are content owners partly responsible because, by making content available digitally, others are able to steal it).
