[OT] Knowledge: Namibia

So has been there or knows someone who has been there? I'm looking for anything positive about the place, or advice for living in southern africa.

The backstory:
My fiance was just nominated to go there to start a new program, and I will be joining her a few months following for a year stay in Windhoek. I do know they have internet service(AOL), so I won't be completely out of it, but it certainly won't be like home.

It certainly does not sound like a very inviting place, all told. Most of it seems to be sand, rock, dirt and variations of the previous. 1% arable land.

Average income per person is $4500 a year despite the country being a primary source for diamonds, and the fifth-largest exporter of Uranium.

25% rate of HiV/AIDS.

Aveage male lifespan: 40 years (factors in AIDS)

But apparently they have a good, 100% digital phone service, with microwave links and such.

Windhoek looks like a nice city, though.
