OT: Looking for help from H.P. Lovecraft scholars (boy, I miss college sometimes)

My fiancee has to write a paper, on a short story of her choice, for her college english class. She was thinking of using one of H. P. Lovecraft's stories as her subject matter. The only problem is that the assignment requires three critical essays on the short story.

We haven't chosen a story yet, since we'll do whichever Lovecraft story we can find three critical essays on. Anyone have an idea where I can find these? We're willing to buy some books (ie: Joshi, etc) to help, but we're not sure which ones to get. Though I'd love to own a huge collection of books on this subject, I simply can't afford it. So if any gurus out there could point me in the right direction, it would be most appreciated :). I think critical essays on the web are fine, as are magazine articles. Anyway, thanks guys! :).

Bit busy at the moment, but off the top of my head, try checking

You may want to run down to your local large bookstore and see if they have any of the Penguin Books collections of Lovecraft. Look for the ones with "Introduction and Notes by S. T. Joshi." His notes in the back sometimes reference essays and the like. I'm sure your college library or a local library can help track down some of those texts through inter-library loan or the like.

I'd be amazed if no one had written any journal articles on Lovecraft over the years, so try using an online journal database and find some academic stuff. They'll love it.

I have access to most of the journals here at the University of Toronto. I'll see what I can dig up for you. btw when do you need these by?

Cheers,

Let me see what I can come up with at work for you tomorrow (Monday). Most of my books here at home are currently boxed up, so I'll have to hit the stacks at the library and see what I can come up with. Starting with Joshi is a good idea, he's edited a few volumes of critical essays on HPL which should prove useful in addition to his own writings.

The best place to find critical essays on modern american authors is in your local public or university library. Try Contemporary Literary Criticism, Dictionary of Literary Biography, and Contemporary Authors, for a start.

If you have access to a good set of online databases, they may well be searchable that way as well. Your library should be able to provide you with such access.

This sort of research is easy at the library, I promise (I'm a librarian, can you tell?)

There used to be a journal called "Lovecraft Studies" published at least during the 1980's that was exactly what you're looking for -- critical essays on Lovecraft. However, it was only published twice a year and was very hard to track down back when I did a similar thing in college.
