OT: Looking for help from H.P. Lovecraft scholars (boy, I miss college sometimes)

The recent Chaosium collection, "Song of Cthulhu" had a Thomas Ligotti essay on "The Music of Erich Zann".

Aside from Joshi, btw, Robert Price is the other big name to look for in anthology editor/Lovecraft critic.

It really depends on how strict the professors are with sources- in my English department we pretty much just did quote-mining, I think I only had a professor check my sources once or twice. One of them was on a Lovecraft paper, mind you, since he'd never heard of the guy.

As an aside, I seem to recall that when I was researching the paper the majority of "serious" (ie academic, if you consider that to be serious) analyses were all in French, for some odd reason.

Anyhow, if things aren't that strict, you can probably get away with one essay devoted to the story and reference some generic collections that might have a good quote about Lovecraft, without being actual essays on the subject.

go to www.dagonbytes.com. They have all H.P. Lovecraft's stories. All great reads. There are a few longer ones that would probably be suitable. Not much discussion, but all the stories are there.

the gizmology link has them all too, in a much eye-easier format, and in PDF files to boot for saving later. :D

First of all, thanks to everyone for their advice so far :). Much appreciated guys!

Well, I've tried journal searches with no luck (though a number of sites seem to only function from universities, and I graduated long ago). I've also checked the local library, but came up with nothing (seems they consider him a "fringe" author) in the critical essay department.

Cthulhu's Librarian... have you had a chance to take a look? Any luck? Thanks btw :), it's much appreciated!

I know there are some out there, because I did a compare/contrast paper long ago between Lovecraft and Poe, and I found several sources on that very topic. I'll look and see if I can find it, but that was several computers and even more years ago, so I can't promise anything.

I just did a search on my local public library's database and came up with the following:

An Epicure in the terrible : a centennial anthology of essays in honor of H.P. Lovecraft / edited by David E. Schultz and S.T. Joshi.

Title : Discovering H.P. Lovecraft / edited by Darrell Schweitzer. Publisher : San Bernardino, CA : Borgo Press, 1987.

Title : H.P. Lovecraft, a critical study / Donald R. Burleson. Publisher : Westport, Conn. : Greenwood Press, c1983.

Title : Romances of the archive in contemporary British fiction / Suzanne Keen. Publisher : Toronto : University of Toronto Press, c2001.

Title : American horror writers / Bob Madison. Publisher : Berkeley Heights, NJ : Enslow Publishers, c2001.

Title : Lord of a visible world : an autobiography in letters / H.P. Lovecraft ; edited by S.T. Joshi and David E. Schultz. Publisher : Athens : Ohio University Press, 2000.

Title : Tales of H.P. Lovecraft : major works / selected and introduced by Joyce Carol Oates. Publisher : Hopewell, N.J. : Ecco Press, 1997.

Title : H.P. Lovecraft and Lovecraft criticism : an annotated bibliography / S.T. Joshi. Publisher : Kent, Ohio : Kent State University Press, 1981, c1980.

There were actually 70+ hits but I just selected the ones that sounded interesting. Hope this helps.

Edit: text color madness.

"... as I made my way down the darkening stair, I caught sight of that abominable text lying, face up, on my marking desk. It seems that I will never be free of the dread thing... it hungers to be read.

As I sat and absorbed the contents, I was made privy to secrets eldritch, elephantine and gibbous. For truley, how can the mortal mind of man survive the knowledge contained within that noxious literary paper ??!?!"

Beware for her tutor's SAN check.

Sorry, it's been really busy today. I haven't had time to do much of anything. If you can wait another day or two, I'll track some things down for you.
