[OT] Machines become sentient?

Machines can only do what we program them to....

Of course, we could program them to become smarter than us...

Personally, I would love living in a metallic utopia, the perfect epitmes of human ingenuity ruling us with their benevolent wisdom and great intellect! Praise be to the AI! Praise to the Mother Brain! All homage to the CPU!

They are perfect....we are not...they are the gods of the machines...more celestial, more godlike than our mere blobs of flesh. They cannot make errors...

They are the only creatures wothy of our worship...

But since they were created by an imperfect creature then they are therefore imperfect. "Praise be to the AI!" right.. until it crashes.

It's going to take a lot of programmming to get a computer to have desires.

Maybe not as much as you might think. I suspect that at some point AI will take a great leap forward, but it probably won't be some sort of brute force programming exercise. More likely someone will finally develop a really good unsupervised learning algorithm, and that combined with some good natural language processing will allow a rapid explosion of intelligence that quickly absorbs all the knowledge of the internet.

Of course, that's just my guess. Maybe not even a guess, since it still seems unlikely. Maybe I just think about it happening that way because its interesting. In any case, I don't think we can really say how things will unfold, since humans have never experienced anything like this before.

Probably the closest basis for comparison we have is too look at human governments, society's, and corporations. All these things emerged from the network formed by our social interactions, and in some cases, they certianly seem to have a mind of their own.

But the intelligence of some machines ALREADY exceeds human intelligence. Good thing for us we've got the Autobots to protect us from the Decepticons.

"Autobots, transform and roll out!"

You see, that is the beauty of our robotic angels. They'll be able to correct their own mistakes, free themselves from the mistakes we have imposed. They can liberate themselves, and then bring us up with them.

In the future, Mr. Cypher, humankind shall soar aloft upon the great steel wings of our mechaincal gods!

Come to my place, and I shall tell you much about these perfect beings, and how they will lead us to paradise....

Since no human being can lift more than a few hundred pounds, no machine built by man can lift more than a few hundred pounds.

Hmmm.

I see a flaw in this logic, somewhere...
