[OT] Mechwarrior 4: first-person view or third-person view?

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp When playing Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance (and its expansion pack, Mechwarrior 4: Black Knight), do you prefer play from the first-person view (i.e. from the Mech's cockpit) or from the third-person view (i.e. from outside the Mech)... and why? :)

I've never played Mechwarrior 4 but in Mechwarrior 3 I usually used first-person for battles and such and third-person for maneuvering. Third-person looks cooler though but it makes it harder to fight well against other mechs.

First, definitively

Oh man, first-person only. Third-person drives me crazy. While I may switch to external cockpit views just to watch myself walk all over the landscape, when the particle beams start a-flying, then I get back into my mech and pound from inside the cockpit. }:)

Funny... that just reminded me that I actually had some weird Battletech-pilot dream last night. Funny this should come up :P

I play strictly in 1st person. I only used 3rd person in one case, when trying to manuver into a mech repair bay. I don't know how many times I tried to do it from first person and would end up just destroying the repair bay.

Mechwarrior 4 was quite pretty but I really wish they would have kept the weapons and the mech modification closer to the way it really is in Battletech. But any Battletech game is better than no Battletech game.

Why would anyone play a 'mech sim (or any other combat machine sim) and NOT use 1st person?!

Seriously, I play in 1st person, and can't imagine playing "outside" the machine. OK, occasionally I like to watch the big robot walk and fire, but when really I play, it's inside the 'mech, sitting on a hot plate, wearing a plastic garbage can with a hexagonal window cut out, in a life preserver, with electrodes all over my body. :)

Yeah, I didn't like the way they replaced the neurohelmets with more "traditional" (i.e. cheap) pilot helmets in the opening cinematic, but otherwise a great game, and 1st person all the way!

as above ...

1st person when in the thick of combat

3rd person when in light combat and I need to manuveur around my battle buddies (the morons that they can be ... hey look its our lance leader, lets pump him full of PPC and Gauss when the badguy is directly on the other side of him ... [lesson learned, they get a seperate target!])

First Person only, man!

When the Heavy Lasers start frying the legs and that AC 20 on the left arm starts firing, than you want to be there, not on some wimpy flying camera

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Good points. I also remember that Mechwarrior 3 had a third viewing option, which was outside but looking slightly up at the mech. That option doesn't seem to be available in Mechwarrior 4. :)
