[OT] Naming a child Arwen

Oh, Alicia. See, I was thinking either Dr. Doom or Galactus, and I couldn't quite picture a girl with either name. ;)

I did know, in high school (actually went out with my little sister a coupla times) a guy named Gamble Lynn Money.

My wife worked with someone named Arwen, who was quite happy with her name. Of course, she was in her 20s by the time the movies came out, so that might change the dynamic somewhat.

I named my daughter after a Fantastic Four supporting character, but worried because it was shared by recently (if perhaps temporarily) popular celebrities -- who I have nothing against, but didn't want it thought that we were the kind of horrible people who name their children after actresses and singers (rather than blind sculptors). There might be a larger cluster of girls with the name in her age bracket than we'd like, but everyone seems to pronounce it differently anyway.

I have an ex girlfriend named Talia, named after an old batman character. We once went to a comic con together and met Neal Adams, who invented the character Talia. She was speechless in meeting him.

Well thanks for the respnses - now I have to convince my wife that my sample population is not scewed....:D

It is quite funny with my other two (Aiden and Afton) we always get.... are those family names? Which is a polite way of saying WTF????

In fact, my mother in law was absoluty speechless after each one - but now she can't see them as anything else.

I think Arwen is very pretty name for a girl. If anyone gives you crap about it tell them this story.

A few years ago ESPN made some kind of joking contest about someone naming their kid after the station. I know the family that did it. The kids name is a Espn, pronounced like Aspen. They were given some sort of package, including clothes, college money, and other things. I still can't belive they did it.

Arwen is much better. Besides, I knew a woman named Galadriel once, though she swore it was not after the character.

I had a childhood friend named Arwen, she'd be about 30 now. I also had a friend with the middle name Rhiannon, it's not uncommon in Wales, I understand. Friends have named their daughter Toril, and another set of friends have named their daughter Anrya, after a character the mother played. I myself am named Penn, which has no gaming connotations but is certainly unusual. I figure as long as stupid nicknames aren't too obvious, it's not a problem. Kids will either make fun of someone or not, depending on the kid, and names have very little to do with it. And I speak as the recipient of 'Pig Pen' as a nickname. Arwen is a nice name, with no obvious nicknames, and has a vaguely Celtic feel. I say go for it.

Arwen is a nice name, I'd go for it. ;)

Observation - my girlfriend seems to be against naming future children after favorite characters.. Might just have something to do with the characters themselves, though.. Eddie (Edgar) was a technical genius, powerful bodybuilder, and cold-hearted mercenary with no regard for human life. I don't know what's wrong with Raoul though. ;) I mean, she's said before that she'd seriously consider naming a daughter Celes...

Celes is almost as good as Aeris or Terra. ;)

Hey, my possible daughter names are Arya, Moiraine, and Cassilda after well...you figure it out. But maybe a "no" on the latter, somehow naming a daughter after a character in "The King In Yellow" might be bad karma, LOL.

That's if I have my way. And we all know I won't, LOL. ;)
