[OT] Naming a child Arwen

I am curious what the overall thoughts of the board is on this.
So, if she is a girl, I would like to name her Arwen.

Beats the hell out of "Avril".

I like it. I think you should go with "Arwen". Very pretty and definately has Celtic flavor to it.

My daughter's name is Celeste and we sometimes get comments about elephants.

Aidan, Aiden, Aden and Adin are all traditional variations of the same name.

Avril is just the French version of "April." I wouldn't personally name my kid after a month, but it's not an uncommon name.

I would, however, like to slap the people who named their kid Anakin.

My eldest daughter is also called Rhiannon and I think that Fleetwood Mac might have influenced the choice of name (albeit subconciously)

I went to college with a girl named Arwen. Looked nothing like Liv Tyler. She was short, had pasty skin and these huge nostrils. But I never thought twice about her name.

I would avoid it just because of the recent revival in LotR interest lately. Don't doubt that she'll at some point be in a class with 2-3 other girls of the same name. Especially stay away from it if you have a common last name like Smith, Jones, Brown, Davis, etc. A good thing to note is that the first half-dozen cool names you think of are the same ones that everybody else thought of too. Avoid baby name books because they're (A) full of worthless completely made-up nonsense (if you just want a list of names, save $5 and look in your phonebook) and (B) because everybody else uses them too.

I don't have reservations about unusual names so much as I do fad names (you know how you look through a kindergarten roster and see 5 Jareds or Chelseas whatever), though it probably won't be as bad as picking the name of the latest new celebrity or soap opera character.

The whole idea about kids being picked on for odd names seems rather suspect to me anyway. When I was a kid, we made fun of each others names regardless of whether they were common as dirt (John, Ben, Amy...) or culled from the most obscure Sumerian clay tablets.

In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't, because Mordenkainen is Product Identity, not Open Game Content, and since it isn't in the SRD, I would have gotten a nastygram from WotC and my d20 license revoked....

My niece is named Leia. No problems encountered whatsoever, she is now approaching age 10.

Being a huge Star Wars geek for the last 25 years I suggested Luke for our son who is now 10 months old. I never thought my wife would go for it (not being a big Star Wars fan) but to my surprise she did. Now I can say "Luke, I am your father" in a deep metallic voice, but the wife finds no humor in it . Oh yea, Arwen is a fine name.
