(OT) Pizza delivery questions

No, but in Sweden everything is so expensive that tipping would break your economy (besides, the one delivering the pizza probably have the same wage as the one receiving it, so it would feel silly to pay a tip in that circumstance). [/B]

I don't follow? Why would they usually have the same wage?

Do those in the UK and elsewhere tip for other things besides pizza delivery? I always tip my barber $3 because he takes the time to get it right and not just give me a generic haircut. It's the polite thing to do in the US because they're doing a good job with a service...at least in this society. I always give at least a $1 when I go through the car wash as well and a few less common things.

They'd be shut down the very same day here it was made known to the unions. Tips are a bonus. Minimum wage is a responsibility of an employer to pay an employee.

You misunderstand: the $2.13 an hour wage is the minimum wage for workers in positions where tipping is customary. It is lower than the standard minimum wage by law, because Congress determined that tipping makes up the difference (more than makes up the difference in some cases). Tips are also taxable as income as well.

By paying his wait staff the $2.13 an hour amount, the employer is in perfect compliance with the law in the U.S.

1) Yes Dominos and most other delivery places in my area accept checks. They seem to not be too particular about them. As long as they are not out of state checks, most places seem to not have a problem.

2) I usually tip. Generally I just have the driver keep the change or most of it <for instance if I am paying for a $13 delivery with a $20 bill>. Tipping definately seems to be expected around here. I have had several delivery people comment when their tip was 'less than satisfactory'.

As for why would anyone order Dominos? Well I am a poor college student and Dominos is by far the least expensive. 3 medium pizzas for $12? Dominos definately gets a call almost every DnD night. Its not the best pizza, but I have grown to like it quite a bit.

I can only speak from my experiences in the Chicago suburbs, but when I was serving food in collage, I made $12-15 an hour on most week nights and $20-40 an hour on weekend nights.

I had a firend that worked at Magnum's Steak House ($50 per person average meal) and he made $500 a night on weekends and $100-200 on weekday nights. This is one reason I do not always pay 15% on meals. Cheap meals I tip around 20% on expensive meals I come in closer to $10, after all, these people are not doctors .

Okayyyy....

How much do these pizza delivery guys make anyway? If everyone here claims tipping let's see.. $3-4 per delivery, or $1 per pizza or 20% or something, that's going to make a nice hourly wage. So if they make 3-4 deliveries in an hour, it's going to be about $10+ in tips per hour.

While that is true, you also have to remember that these delivery drivers are using thier own cars and paying for thier own gas. So say they do make 4 deliveris in an hour and work 5 hours a night. That means about 20 deliveries that night. Not everyone ordering pizza is right around from the pizza place. So it is not uncommon for a driver to use 1/2 of a tank of gas in one night.

Also most chains require thier drivers to have insurance on their cars. So the driver might make $50 a night in tips, but they are also having to pay quite a bit in expenses.

Oh and just in case you don't know, it is very rare for a delivery driver to get 40 hours in a week. My brother says that most of his drivers average around 30 hours a week.

It's true. And Pat's thin-crust is a particularly insidious in its lure: classic Chicago pizza cut -- round, sliced into squares -- and yet so thin it's deceptive. You just keep dropping little pizza squares into your mouth like popcorn, thinking, "Yeah, this is nice." Then you look down at the box and the pie is gone. All of it. A large.

Come to Chicago, and kneel before the pizza.

Damned straight.

I didn't know this. Here in finland pizza joints have their own vehicles which are painted in their colors..

Now this I don't get. Why should the devlivery guy get paid for hours he didn't do in the first place? Quite simple: work 30 hours, get paid for 30. Should the tippers ensure he gets paid for those 10 extra hours he didn't do?

1) Cash is passe -- I only use it for vending machines. Check is becoming so. Unfortunately, almost no pizza place around here takes cards, so I use check. Haven't been turned down yet.

I don't eat Domino's, though. The politics don't bother me, but the pizza is disgusting. Since he's sold the chain, I doubt I'll try it again (and that's as close as I'll get to that).

2) My tips usually amount to a buck or two. More in the "keep the change" category (unless the weather sucks). I used to work at a Pizza Hut, and did delivery, waiting tables, and cooking at various times. The drivers have the easiest job and make almost as much base money as the management. On top of that, they get money for each delivery (10 years ago, it was $.50) from the company.

Even as a driver, I always thought the idea of tipping was pretty thin. A job a poorly trained monkey could do and the highest "staff" pay in the store.

Oh, yeah! Almost forgot (actually, I did, so I'm editing):

Papa John's is the best delivery chain. About the only better pizza comes from local places or Happy Joe's, which is just too darned expensive.
