[OT] Poetry

With the recent (very fun) 'haiku' contest ran by Teflon Billy and the more recent 'emulate Dr. Suess' thing happening right now (another I plan to play about with) I was sort of wondering...

How many poets do we have on these boards?

I know I have written a lot of poetry over the years; have been published twice and have continued to use poetry as a sort of self-analysis and therapy. I have a web page for some of my longer pieces and quite a few up on the International Library of Poetry web site. Between these, this constitutes less than 1% of the poetry I have written.

I am a poet, and a soon-to-graduate Creative Writing major at the University of New Mexico. I have written too little lately, but I do have a portfolio of my work. Some time ago I got a poem published in an anthology for the Nationial Library of Congress designed to record early poetry from potential professional American poets.

I like say I'm a poet too; One of my poems was published by the people at the International Library of Poetry in their last collection, and they sent me an application for their poet laureate program. It all seems like a money-making scheme to me, but hey, I've got a book with my stuff in it. That's cool.

I like to consider myself a poet, but I usually don't use pen and paper. I prefer a guitar and my voice. The problem has always been finding other "poets" who share my vision. I've got a ton of stuff written, but it's just collecting dust while I look for musicians who want more than to be the next Blink 182...all this campy, cheesey emo-punk-pop crap makes me nauseous. :)

I wrote many poems years ago, believe it or not! I never thought of publishing them, I used my writing more to vent than anything else. So there not the usual lovey, frilly pieces that you would expect. I've been told more than once that they are a bit morbid? There collecting dust as we speak, it's probably best I stick to art.;)

I am a poet and I had several poems published mostly in local newspaper and small fanzines several years ago. I also write short stories and songs. Most of my work is posted at my website as well as stories by my friend.

I'll bite...

I don't have any of my stuff on a webpage, and I don't have time to put it up right now, so I'll just post it here and watch it get moved :-). It's all copyrighted, so I'm not terribly worried about it, but bear in mind it's a song, not necessarily a poem:

A Little Less

The day I met you, you blew my mind
Seemed we were made a similar kind
But how was I supposed to know what would transpire
And that sleeping with you meant I was playing with fire

I don't mean to derail your train...
You might be a little less than sane

The smallest things with you cause such commotion
You're constantly suspect of my devotion
Well I don't quite know about "the rest of our lives"
But I'll say anything you want, just please put down that knife

I know I really should refrain...
But I think you're a little less than sane

You left 47 messages in a two-hour span
Friends, family, my new girlfriend
You'll stalk me any way you can

I leave the place, you follow me to find out whom I'm with
Some would say you're paranoid, but I'll plead the fifth
You ought to get a grip on your ever-changing tides
Cause one date with you is a night with Jekyll and Hyde

You call me at work 10 times a day
You really need to medicate
Restraining order's on the way
Cause you're a little less than sane

- I just LOVE crazy ex-girlfriends! :)
