when a gay couple gets married, do they wear wedding bands on their right hands?

PLEASE dont let this topic turn into a political downward spiral. I just want an answer to my above question. If this offends anybody in anyway, please just ignore the topic and move on.

Question:What finger does the wedding ring go on?

Rita Says: Well, as it turns out Paula and I had this very discussion recently. On PrideBride.com we suggest the ring going on the right hand ring finger. To us it indicates that we are together but still distinct from the ‘het’ crowd It would be great if the traditional our generation started was that the gay wedding ring is on the right hand.

Now I must say we did a bit of research on this subject and we discovered a few things. In some Eastern European countries it is common to wear your wedding ring on the right finger already. And some cultures wear the wedding ring of their dead mother on the right hand too. So, it really is a personal choice as there is no definitive custom.

Example of Hetero Phobic?

Right ear for earings (80s), right Hand. Makes sense to me.

As a single gay man living in San Francisco, I would have to disagree with the recommendations to go with the right hand.

If I see a band on the left ring finger of a cute guy, I know he is spoken for; if I see a band on the right ring finger I don't really know if he's in a relationship or just accessorizing. I think the need to 'differentiate' from hets on this is misplaced; unavailable is unavailable. I'm very non-assimilationist, too, so my stance on this is not biased by any desire to 'fit in'.

Oh, & the 'right earring' thing was not really about gay vs. straight, but about um... something Eric's grandmother wouldn't care to know.

Edited to add last paragraph.

My wife and I both wear our rings on the right hand because we are both Ukrainian Orthodox and she is from Ukraine. Everybody there wears the ring on the right hand, because traditionally this is the norm. The ring was switched to the left hand during the Industrial Revolution in the west for obvious reasons (machining, etc.). To answer the original question, I have no idea, but bear in mind that a wedding ring or marriage band is not something you arbitrarily wear wherever you want. If you want to know for sure ask your clergyman (of whatever faith you are), or whoever performed the service. A wedding band is to signify you are married, not that you are a married gay.

The married homosexuals that I and my friends know all wear their rings on their left hands.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to use the right hand. If one is going to go through the effort to advertise a committed relationship, use the common symbology of the culture.
