in the ongoing fight to keep file sharing of copyrighted music out of the hands of the public, the RIAA is now subpoenaing ... well, pretty much everyone now. you can read the story here. if you weren't aware, and you may be at risk, here's your warning. (there's a link to check on your own personal possible subpoena in the article.)

personally, i think that the RIAA and certain rock bands who shall remain nameless (:p) have blown the whole thing way out of proportion, and the loss of revenue was grossly misreported only to support actions like this. when the RIAA was crying foul, sales were down a fraction of a per cent. yes, under 1%.

there's more that i have to say on the subject, but it's late, and i just wanted to start this. in the meantime, what do you think about P2P file sharing, and the copyright issues?

I saw an interview with Dave Matthews last night, it was from 2001, and he said that he had been asked to join in the lawsuit. He had declined, since he makes a rediculously good living as is, and couldn't conceive of the mindset it would take to go around suing people for the 30 cents a song he might theoretically be losing in some lawyer's mind.

He said it's not like he's a painter, and he finishes his masterpiece and people come in and steal it at gunpoint, it's just a copy.

A good perspective for any big band to have, I think.

Sales were down? In a recession? You don't say! It's like the RIAA is completely disconnected from reality.

I read a story that since there are 60 million P2P users, it will take something like a couple hundred years for them to sue even 1 PERCENT of those file sharers at the rate of 75 subpoenas a day. Of course their strategy is to try and get the "bleed over" effect and hope that the people who get caught will deter others. But I think its just gonna swing the other way.

Right now, the RIAA looks like the bully. That's the wrong way to gain sympathy with their cause. No one likes a bully, especially a rich one.
