[OT] School Started Today

Started my fifth undergrad year on Monday.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool student, I imagine I'll have to be a prof or researcher of some sort just to stay in the academic arena.

The biggest problem here is the fact that I live in the middle of Alabama and it's about 80% humidity and 96 degrees out there, and I have five blocks to walk to and from classes. Gack.

I am contemplating the possibility of teaching, though it would probably be college-level. However, the money is so bad compared to what I made in the last year (in fact starting college professors make exactly 1/3 of what I made last year), that it would be a difficult road for me to walk.

I do feel the rewards are high, as a teacher. But such a loss of income...

Has anyone else made this kind of trade-off?

Heh. I'm currently making 35K a year at a community college, and that seems like a kingly sum to me. I couldn't really imagine making much more than that. What would I do with all that money?

Then again, my job before this one was teaching at a university as an adjunct instructor. I taught six classes a semester and made just over 16K a year. I did that for seven years....

Oh, and this is the second week of classes for me. :)

Starting my first year of college Monday, but I need to be there Friday morning. I'm looking forward to it, actually. :) I'm thinking I might have some decent classes from here out!

Well, we are coming from different backgrounds. You live in Hopkinsville, KY, and I live in Los Angeles, CA. That's a big difference in cost of living. I've also been an attorney for the last 7 years, rather than an adjunct instructor. So I could walk into a $120K/yr job with some effort if I wanted to.

I don't know your age, but I'm 33, and may start a family in the next several years, and would like to buy a house. I can afford the down payment, but continuing payments would be impossible to do in this area on $40K a year (which is what local new college professors make), not to mention paying back my student loans as well.

More importantly, Wolfspider, do you enjoy what you are doing? Is it fulfilling?

I'm DONE!!!

While I hate to hear that those who have to go back to school have to go back, I am glad my daughter is back in school, but mostly I'm thrilled to have finished my Master's Degree in August. Woo hoo!! No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers . . . um . . I guess I ought to show a bit more decorum. :D

To those in school or heading back, take heart, it will eventually be over, and then you can enter the workforce. Hmm, that didn't really sound to encouraging, huh. Oh well, I'M DONE WITH MY MASTER'S!!!

I am at university now and no longer care, but I thought all of you who start in August may find it interesting that in Italy starting school in mid-september is normal. Kids consider themselves very unlucky when they happen to start in the first week of september. Starting in August would probably cause riots or something. :D
