(OT) Shocking news from Hollywood!

Yesterday I was idley flipping through the newest issue of entertainment weekly when I stumbled accross some of the best and worst entertainment news I've seen in awhile.

It seems that Homer's great epic, The Illiad, is being made into a major motion picture entitled "Troy" by Director/producer Wolfgang Petersen (''The Perfect Storm''). Now that got me quite excited, I have been wishing for this to be done for quite some time, until i read further.

Here is the bad news. The part of Achilles will be played by none other than pretty boy Brad Pitt and Hector will be played by soon to be Hulk Eric Bana. WTF!

I mean come on. When I think of Hector and Achilles, two of the mightiest warriors in history (mythology), I do not see Brad Pitt or Eric Bana. I could see Brad Pitt as Paris maybe, but Achilles, I don't think so.

Anyway, other than the casting choices i have heard so far, it sounds like it will pretty damn good. Can't wait to see who they get to play Helen of Troy.

That was almost as shocking as the announcement that there is soon to be a production based on Alexander the Great.

And Leonardo DeCaprio is in talks for the role as Alexander. No joke.

Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.

Kind of gives that whole “King of the world” line new meaning.

From what little I've heard of Great Alexander, that seems to be a rather good choice.

Unless, of course, you deny the actor any acting capability because he has a pretty face and has acted in a few bad movies. In that case it would seems a rather bad choice.

Dunno about Mr Pitt.

As for Eric Bana, he's managed to string together a variety of successes in widely differing fields; I certainly believe he's got the ability to do justice to Hector.

The big question is, will they use Manowar's Achilles, Agony and Ecstacy in Eight Parts in the soundtrack?

Other Titles

I'm looking forward to the movie on the Turkish siege of Malta by the Snatch guy.

I also heard they were doing a movie about Hannibal starring the guy from Triple X.

I can see Brad Pitt as Achilles, he was certainly violent enough in Fight Club, if a little chatty.

Besides, when it comes right down to it, the real question is, "What does the armor look like?"

Don't know anything about this Bana fellow, but Pitt's certainly got the chops and the presence to be Achilles.

On a side note one can only pray to their deity of choice that they don't decide to go with a rock/mettle/techno sound track, much less Manowar. Heroic and epic orchestral scores please.

If you have any suggestion as to who should play those two parts, by all means share it ... unless they happened to be from the professional wrestling world.

They're trying to make an epic movie, not a B movie. If Russell Crowe can do Gladiator and Harry Hamlin (before LA Law) can do Clash of the Titan, I got no problem with Brad Pitt and Eric Bana, who are probably in the gym bulking up right now.

Besides, my image of the Greeks and Trojans are not of Mr. Universe bodybuilder types. Those are reserved for gods and demigods like Heracles.

Well since you mention it, I do think Russell Crowe would be a good choice for either part. Vin Diesel, given a good script might be able to pull of one of the characters, especially Hector. I am not looking for "Mr. Universe" here, but a certain amount of physical presense I think is a must.

The last thing I want to see is the Iliad butchered by a "B" movie script or performance. This has been on my wish list for years so my fingers are crossed and my prayers have been said.

I thought it was a done deal. At least in relation to the Luhrmann directed film.

As far as I know, for awhile there were a whole heap of Alexander projects...a Ridley Scott one; a Oliver Stone film; and a long mini-series that was being worked on by Mel Gibsons company.

Dunno much about this one, aside from the comment from Baz that Alexander's sexuality will be dealt with.

I dont think its that bad. I'm more concerned about what the script will look like.

Yeah. How do you cast Helen?
