[OT] Star Wars Ep 4-6 on DVD and for sale already?

I wouldn't worry too much about when the DVD's will get put out (heck buy the ones from the link that's all three for $31.99). When he gets around to them they will be something special. My biggest gripe with it is that I'd like to have the originals on DVD and I bet that will never happen. It's not that the special editions are bad it's just the originals are........ well the originals. Of course my VCR still works just fine and I got 3 copies laying around the house (original widescreen, special edition pan and scan and special edition widescreen), I'll make it just fine for a while.

As far as Lucas goes, yes he's nuts and he's out of touch with reality but no matter what he does he's not going to get a break either, lets face it the new movies are not the old movies nor are they supposed to be the old movies. The new movies are for young people (just like the old movies were in their day) us original fans have grown up but the movies didn't. The original movies changed the industry the new movies don't have a chance of living up to that legacy no matter what he does.

Could it also be because he wants to release all 6 DVDs at once when Ep. III comes out?

Besides, I'd like to see how the movies were made. It gives me insight on what to do when I try and make my own low-budget fan films. I watched them all when I saw any of the latest Star Trek movies (especially the corridor fight and the driving around on Kolarus III in Nemesis), or the Matrix (the lobby scene, for example), or anything that I thought was good directing, good acting, or just good SPFX.

Yeah, that's my concern also. When I finally see Episode IV on DVD, I DON'T want to see Greedo shoot first, damn it!

I've been watching this thread with mixed emotions.

I've been a Star Wars fan from day one (a friend and I had collected ALL the action figures from the first three movies) and I've supported Lucas all the way. The movies just seemed to get cornier the longer they went, though. I was 11 when Star Wars first came out (am I dating myself???) and I never noticed the pitiful acting done by Mark Hamill (sp?) the first couple of hundred times I saw the first movie. I was a little older when The Empire Strikes Back came out on HBO (which I also watched a couple of hundred times). I was even older when Return of the Jedi came out. Although the action was considerably better during light saber battles (especially the horribly choreographed Obi-Wan/Vader duel of the first movie), I was still left with a bitter taste with the "soap opera" drama. But I was still sold.

I was one of the many that was still hopeful that Star Wars would continue into the originally planned 9 episodes, but I have to admit that I was let down by Episode 1. Once the Pod Race began, it was 100% thrill ride (although I wished there had been 100 times more Darth Maul!!!!!). I was more impressed by Episode 2, since the action started from the get-go and only occasionally relented.

But again.....Looking back at what the first three episodes had (except that they're episodes 4 through 6), I'm a little disappointed.

When did Artoo get the ability to fly???? He wouldn't have needed the big suction cup in "A New Hope" or "The Empire Strikes Back" to be loaded into the X-Wing....He could have just flown in there. He could have flown out of the swamp in Dagobah. Do I need to continue this????

I'm a little jaded that Lucas requires all of the authors (that write in the Star Wars universe) to follow a certain story line and not contradict what other authors have put forth. Why can't he follow the same laws????

The way I remember, the reason Artoo and Threepio were the only three characters to be in all 9 movies was because their memories were never wiped. Threepio wouldn't remember that Anakin SKYWALKER created him and that Luke SKYWALKER might happen to be related never came across his electronic mind????

Granted....The action of Maul's light saber duel wouldn't have grabbed me if he couldn't stomp the stuffing out of what the original trilogy produced, but that kind of puts a damper on getting episodes 4 through 6 put out on DVD without a COMPLETE reshoot.

I'm not trying to put down the original, because we wouldn't have what we have now, but I'm more than a little disappointed.

Who here would like to see Episodes 4 through 6 completely redone (with new action and stories) along with the before mentioned Episodes 7 through 9????

I realize this goes against canon, and I should probably don a fire proof "asbestos" suit for the flaming I'm about to take, but I'm curious what other Star Wars fans think.

Am I alone here????

I don't flame.

Fair enough. :)

I loved The Phantom Menace. Not as good as A New Hope or Empire Strikes Back but just as good as Return of the Jedi. I say this just so you have an idea of where I am coming from.

The technology changed significantly in the 20 years after the Rise of Empire period. It is quite easy to justify why R2 can't fly - because he's been modified. If these were sequels the same could be said. Things change. The time period we are seeing in the prequels is still remnants of the Golden Age of the Republic. That is just another byproduct.

He does. And if we had a few dozen interpretations of the same story things would be impossible to follow. I wouldn't want that to happed to my creation either.

That may have been the way it was going to be, but that changed. It is also obvious that at least 3PO's memory has been wiped because he doesn't remember his homeworld or Obi-wan. I don't know about R2. He may still have his memory intact.

No damper for me. Watching that Death Star battle will always be great, especially after the touch-ups made in the Special Edition. :)

Redo another classic movie, and Star Wars to boot? Most certainly not. Lucas decided that his story didn't need 9 parts just the six and I am fine with that. Sure, I'd love to see more Star Wars movies but that isn't the reality of things. Star Wars is about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and his redemption by his son. That's it. No more story to tell and it is nicely wrapped up.

I'm sure that if 4-6 were redone they would look different but I wouldn't want them to. The look of those movies was part of their allure. And the focus of Star Wars has never been the acting. Most of it is laughable but again that is part of the franchise. I'm looking forward to Episdoe 3 because Lucas has said that it will be a synthesis of the newer look of the prequels and the older look of the original trilogy.

So, no - I would not like in any way, shape or form like to see the original trilogy redone. There would be no purpose to it as far as I can see.

Except that he really doesn't. The movies violated book-cannon in a number of places, though sleep-haze prevents me from remembering more than the one that really stuck out at me, the loss of Vader's arm.

Granted, Lucus really doesn't have to follow the cannon of the books wrote by Zhan, but if Lucas is going to be so damn strict on what he allows to be wrote, you think he would follow it.

No disagreement here.

(although I wished there had been 100 times more Darth Maul!!!!!).

Read Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. It's a great book and explains a lot about Darth Maul.

I was more impressed by Episode 2, since the action started from the get-go and only occasionally relented.

Again, no disagreement here.

I believe he did. I can't remember exactly what the story was or where I read it, but originally, Lucas planned for the capital world of the Republic to be called something else when he wrote Ep. 1. But one of the EU novelists convinced him to use "Coruscant."

Who here would like to see Episodes 4 through 6 completely redone?

Have you ever seen the episode of South Park: Episode 609 - Free Hat? The boys try to stop directors from rereleasing their movies, since they went to see ESB remastered (re-re-re-released), where they changed the word to "wookiee" to "Hair challenged animal" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks. Well, that, and the previews of other movies to be rereleased...

There is no "book canon." None of the novels are Lucas vision of Star Wars. His movies are not influenced by any of them.

If the books were considered canon I would expect him to try and be faithful to them but they are not and never have been.
