[OT] Star Wars Ep 4-6 on DVD and for sale already?

I believe he did. I can't remember exactly what the story was or where I read it, but originally, Lucas planned for the capital world of the Republic to be called something else when he wrote Ep. 1. But one of the EU novelists convinced him to use "Coruscant."
That doesn't sound right. Coruscant, while not mentioned by name in the Original Trilogy was always the capital of the Republic/Empire - it was featured in the screenplay and was shown at the very end of Return of the Jedi: SE.

There is no "book canon." None of the novels are Lucas vision of Star Wars. His movies are not influenced by any of them.

If the books were considered canon I would expect him to try and be faithful to them but they are not and never have been.

I think that's what he means. Lucas requires the books to maintain continuity, while ignoring any continuity with those books when he makes his movies.

(I wonder if older books that are now contradictions of the movies get penalized :)

Redo another classic movie, and Star Wars to boot? Most certainly not. Lucas decided that his story didn't need 9 parts just the six and I am fine with that. Sure, I'd love to see more Star Wars movies but that isn't the reality of things. Star Wars is about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and his redemption by his son. That's it. No more story to tell and it is nicely wrapped up.

I'm sure that if 4-6 were redone they would look different but I wouldn't want them to. The look of those movies was part of their allure. And the focus of Star Wars has never been the acting. Most of it is laughable but again that is part of the franchise. I'm looking forward to Episdoe 3 because Lucas has said that it will be a synthesis of the newer look of the prequels and the older look of the original trilogy.

So, no - I would not like in any way, shape or form like to see the original trilogy redone. There would be no purpose to it as far as I can see.

Once again.....I'm not saying that I believe that the first 3 should be remade, I'm just curious what others think about that possibility.

Even if they were.....I would pay triple normal price to get the originals.....I'm just curious what Lucas could come up with to improve on what's been given.

I believe it was I who said
Who here would like to see Episodes 4 through 6 completely redone (with new action and stories) along with the before mentioned Episodes 7 through 9????

I own the new VHS tapes (couldn't tell you on a bet what they're called), and appreciated the new sections. I was just trying to throw another twist into what Lucas may be thinking......

Especially thinking what I'm thinking.....LOL

P.S.
I've always been a fan of Crichton's opinions and have rarely disagreed with his thoughts. I also love his Avatar being a HUGE fan of Doghma (although I was a little disappointed with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.....Even if Eliza Dushku was among the cast).

Ah, I may have gotten my signals crossed there. ;)

I don't think Lucas reads many (in any) of the EU novels, especially the newer ones. Continuity is a funny thing in general. As far as I know there is not even a comprehensive collection of all the canon/EU/comic book/video game material. That would be interesting to see as I'm sure there are many things that just don't add up.

As for the Lucas wanting all the EU novels to make sense with each other, that isn't something that is much of a big deal to most people. They are trumped by canon and I'm pretty certain that Lucas isn't going out of his way to stomp all over them. However if there are parts in his prequels that contradict what is in the novels he is covered because they simply aren't canon and are books only based on the stories he's told in his movies, not an official continuation.

I don't blame Lucas for ignoring any of the novels that aren't novelizations of the movies. The number is too great to make any true sense of it and there are new books coming out all the time. The same holds true for the Star Trek series. If it ain't in the shows/movies it didn't officially happen and is not considered canon. Sounds good to me. :)

EDIT: Grammar.

Totally understood and now clarified for my enjoyment. :)

I am in the same boat for the DVDs - I would gladly pay for both the SE and originals. While I adore most of the SE changes there are a few that I rather Lucas not take a second look at because he is a different person now than he was when the movies were originally made. If they were to be remade I have to admit that I would definately have to see how it was done and it could be really good. But I'd rather have whoever works on it do something else with all that money and time.

Well, thanks! :) I'm always up for a good Star Wars conversation. I don't get enough of them. :D

Note: Head over the to the Computer/Games forum and check out the Knights of the Republic thread or just buy the game. Great Star Wars stuff there!

I've been checking out that thread BION. I originally checked it out because I thought that was relevant to Episode III (call me stupid....AGAIN!!!!!). I then saw the preview stuff on my recent trip to Fort Hays, Kansas on my sojourn to purchase 3.5 edition D&D books (which was, again, an almost complete failure, but I digress).

Please tell me you've seen a release date on KOTOR, and if you have, regale me with your insight, and forgive the ignorance of those who reside in the blighted lands (i.e. Western Kansas)!!!!!

I've threatened the players of my RttToEE with a Darth Maul type NPC to "hasten their demise," but have been unable to implement such a TPK element to their adventure.

Once again, I've taken a totally relevant thread and hijacked it for my own insiduous agenda.....LOL.

Back to an almost relevant point:

It's been so long since I've viewed the SE VHS tapes.....Did Lucas include the footage of Biggs and Luke talking about joining the rebellion that was cut in the original Star Wars: A New Hope movie? I remember something about FOX saying that the movie was too long and Lucas cutting that point.

Did it make it to the SE?

Once again.....I'm an idiot.....LOL

Read Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. It's a great book and explains a lot about Darth Maul.

There's also an eBook called Darth Maul Saboteur by James Luceno. He also wrote Cloak of Deception (which I believe follows Saboteur closely timeline wise and has an easter egg for those reading the NJO series), as wells as the NJO Agents of Chaos books (nothing to do with the Jester's story hour).

There's nothing with them on Tatooine, but there is something in the fighter hanger between the two. I forget what exactly was said however. I was thinking of watching them again, it's been a while, if I do I'll post what it was.

Yup, something in the X-Wing fighter bay about them kicking the Empire's butt together.

Good scene and easily the best addition to the SEs.

Or he's just too busy making new movies that are eating up all his time and he cares so much for the original films that he wants to dedicate the time and energy to doing the DVD's right.
Exactly. Just like Peter Jackson. Oh wait. He's been editing and reshooting and doing post-production for his films and releasing the DVD's (both theatrical and special editions no less)for two straight years now.

And then there's Spielberg. Found the time to make TWO WHOLE MOVIES (Minority Report and Catch Me if You Can) during the time the definitive E.T. DVD was in development.

Lucas can easily release the DVD's. Nobody cares about "double dipping" with bare bones and loaded DVD's later. Where was the outrage when the FOTR SE came out? Nowhere. He's dragging his feet, most likely because he wants to wait and add several NEW musical numbers and fart jokes to the original films before releasing them. ;)
