(OT) Teenager dies of Acute Stupidity Disorder

According to witnesses, Daniel walked up to the blowhole from Sandy Beach and may not have known of the area's hazardous conditions.

At the blowhole, he leaned over the opening, forming a bridge with his body. About 30 seconds later, a geyser of water shot through the hole, catching him square in the chest and sending him 8 to 12 feet into the air. He somersaulted and disappeared head-first into the blowhole.

Evolution in action?

maybe we oughta work on getting rid of some of the truly evil people in this world - there are plenty of them, last time i looked at the newspaper.

Can we get them to Hawaii...?

I've said it before, I'll say it again: up until I read this article, I thought a "blowhole" was what a whale uses to breathe. If someone told me to "look out for the blowhole" I'd have thought they meant "don't choke any whales" and promptly ignored it.

Also, my GF lived in Hawaii for two semesters. This was the first time she heard of the word in this context as well. Perhpas she doesn't read signs. Perhaps she was told and forgot. Perhaps she drank too many fruity drinks and killed the brain cell that had that data. Regardless, she didn't know.

I also did a google search on "Hawaii danger", the only bolehole stuff I got was about this guy.

It seems to me that this issue became "common sense" only until after he died.

I'll say one last thing, and then I'll quit, since this seems to be a potential flame-ridden topic: I have known to avoid standing near geysers of any shape or form since I was a very young person, and I have never grown up around any geyser of any type. This was a geyser, and a very active one at that. Just like a typhoon is basically a hurricane, a "blowhole" is a geyser.

I will close by saying that I feel nothing but sadness that a young life was lost, and it is more than a little macabre to me to deride the deceased for their stupidity.

A sign stating the danger would be enough. We don't need a Nany State, protecting us from cradle to grave. I have never heard of a blow hole either. And I might look down a hole in the ground to see what is there too. I wouldn't do it at Yellowstone national park though!

This poor woman lost her son to an acident, and wants to blame somebody. If there is a grate on it people will stand on it. (Law of unintended concequences) What will happen then. He probably would have broken his neck landing head first on the grate.

I have pity and sympathy for her.

If you want to her of a true story of real stupidity, in NY state a few years back a 19-20 year old kid was hunting during muzzle loading season. He shot at a deer and the gun did not go off. So he looked downthe barrle to see what was going on. Since the barrel is dark and he couldn't see very well he used his BIC lighter to make some light and look down the bore. BANG he blew his head off with a .50 caliber sabot. This dope ignored every gun safety rule ever written. THIS is stupid. Not that kid with the blow hole.

While a sad ordeal, a grate? For crying out loud, the world is getting waaaaaaay too soft if that does happen. Just as well outlaw automobiles too, look at how many people die in cars with sober people driving, let alone drunk. I feel sorry for the kid's family, but hey, he did something stupid, and the decisions of people doing something ridiculous should not restrict the movements of people who do think before they act.
