Everybody knows somebody who was, shall we say, an ethusiastic proponet of their interpretation of the rules.
Someone who would happily stop the game for a few minutes (or longer) to discuss the finer points of wording, grammar and syntax. The kind of person who could crust an unsure DM without breaking a sweat.
Then there was the true rules lawyer. Everybody knows somebody who was tremendous, so capible of doing twice as much with the same character as any other player as to be considered a paragon of the art. I've known a few in my day.
My favorite would, when someone went to pick up the rulebook, insist; "I read all the rulebooks during an acid trip. I can flash back to any page. On page xx it says just what I told you."
