[OT] THIS is American Sportsmanship ??

well, it's a diversion/hobby for many people. it certainly doesn't excuse rude and beligerent fans, but many good people live and die with their teams, much the same way that people here are very serious about characters who don't really exist. :)

Y'know what surprises me the most? Not only that people get too wrapped up in their sports, but that it seems to be a world-wide phenomenon. It's even worse outside North America, what with all the soccer game riots. I mean, I like watching some sports, and I've gotten into a game occasionally, but not enough to be hateful or violent.

Human being need to express their emotions, and in our world of false thing and apparence over the real being, sports event is the best place to be ourselve.

There's moment of high pleasure, and moment of great deception. We can, laugh, cry, scream, etc, without shame, and without bothering what the other will think.

It's good to love our team, our provinces (or states), and our country. It's bring the rivalry and the competition even more high.

But, it's true that violence does'nt have his place within the partisan :(

You mentioned sportsmanship - my question is, how did the TEAMS treat each other on the ice? (Besides the pushing, shoving and breaking of teeth that is hockey, of course)

He, hockey is the best sports in the world. There's a lot of action, it's really fast, and yes, it's intense and physical. Hockey is not a golf game. And yhe team respect each other, but they want to win. Winning is the only goal.

May have spoke too soon. Did you see the Wings/Canuck's game last night? Hardly the paragon of sportsmanship there amongst the Canuck-fans. There was distinctive booing at the beginning of the American national anthem (although it finished to loud cheers) there were fights amongst Canuck's fans themselves because they were so drunk and pissed off, and the wings were pelted with bottles, cups, blue wigs, and apparently a small fish by Canuck's fans after scoring the fourth goal.

GO WINGS!!! :D
Yep, I was hoping my fellow countrymen would be smart enough not to stoop to that level. I was just listening to a radio show up here where the show was asking why Canadians would be so stupid and a guy calling in said "we were just getting them back for booing the Raptors", to which the announcer said "I guess that just shows that stupidity is the only thing that is truly international. "

...and THIS is why I don't go to sproting events - ESPECIALLY Hockey. If I want that kind of treatment, I'll wear a Jewish Pride T-shirt at a KKK rally.

Nah, do what I did as a teenager: get your best bud, who is black, and approach a KKK recruiter pretending to be a gay multi-racial couple. Now that was fun :D

Thankfully there hasn't been anything at all resembling what goes on in soccer. I mean, come on, burning down stadiums and assassinating losing goaltenders!!! Sheesh.

What I want to know is why do fans riot after winning a championship? We don't in St. Louis so I can' t understand it. I remember reading stuff about fans killing each other when the Pistons won the title. What the hell?

Second Detroit is not some city full of hooligans like the world seems to think.Yes there is a crime problem in the inner city but the large majority of Detroiters are good law abiding citizens.Ask any one who lives here in the detroit area.

You dont have to worry, over here Detroit is mostly known for cars and the superhero from Detroit (dont remember who) :D

On topic: Be glad that it isnt worse. As you said about soccer, that game has insane supporters (not all of them of course). One supporter club even has a strike force, a couple of hooligans who drive around in a van beating up opposing supporter club's members.

I wonder if anything in society is marked by a lower degree of sportsmanship than actual sport?

Well I'm just suprised no one mentioned MY Flyers and the Philly fans THERE. :) Course considering the management AND the fact the offense isn't producing...they'd probably CHEER the Sens. :)
