[OT?] True AOL story.

That is a great write up! Hilarious :-)

I had a similar, though less dramatic experience when I cancelled my free trial.

I did have to laugh a little when she, going through the features I would be giving up, explained to me how if I cancelled I'd no longer have access to the "AOL Internet", and would ONLY have access to the regular internet.

I would have said to Her "you mean I will no longer get a bunch of pop ups and porn spam in my email if I cancel?" :D
 

See, this is why I give fake mailing addresses and fake names when I sign up for the trial accounts. Especially since they don't require a credit card. :)

If they want to try to track down John Q Public, living at 123 Main Street in Napa, more power to them.

At least this way, I don't have to deal with the long and complicated process of ending my AOL accounts...
 

My father works overseas, my younger brother (early 20's) was living in his house and going to school (and apparently letting friends live there for free too, but that's another story). Somebody at the house used one of those free AOL disk and told them to just add it to the phone bill, that was 18 months ago and we still haven't gotten it taken off the bill, Dad can't cancel it because we don't know the user name and password, nobody does because nobody uses it, he has called them several times but they want to know the user name, which nobody knows. The phone company says AOL has to remove it from the bill and AOL says they can't change somebody elses account, it's looking more and more like it's going to take a lawyer to straighten out. The account is not in use, nobody remembers who even used the disk, they think somebody used it once and then just forgot about it (my younger brother is very bad about things like that). At one time Dad actually had three separate AOL accounts, none of which he was actually using himself, he now has one account but he can't use it because he doesn't know the user name and password (he even said he would just keep it and use it if they would just let him access it).
 

I read a memo on a website that posts internal memos from companies, and it was a manager of the Member Save division berating his people for not saving more members, so, if it was a real memo from AOL, I could understand Habib's trepidation for losing a customer. I might feel sorry for Habib, but not for AOL.
