Sweet. I saw it in the theaters too; it was great. I heard that there's no Japanese audio track though, just the bad English voices. Anyone else hear the same?

*side rant*

Ok, I could understand it when the only anime 99% of Americans knew about was AstroBoy, Sailor Moon, and Dragonball Z, and maybe if they were really well versed Akira, and Project A-Ko, at best...

But why, in the last few years, is it still impossible to get good VAs for anime? Why? It's not like it's a smear on your resume or anything, it's not like there is no market for it...

Ok, yes, there are exceptions... Generaly, ADV has managed to get pretty good VAs, so has AnimeWorks... The other companies have a semi-good track record now... but you still get some really terrible dubs. I mean, for gods sake... Akira was one of the best dubs of all time IMO, and then they released the new "special edition"... and completely changed the dub... and now it's one of the WORST dubs of all time (Right down there with the american release of Sailor Moon... *shudder* ok, maybe not that bad, but...)

What would it be an anime thread in ENWorld without Tsyr aswering it?
:D

Tsyr, your a living anime encyclopedia!!!!

Hmmm.

Well, I'm not the only one probably, just the first... AaronL(Pardon if I got the name a bit off) and Jack Carter should show up one of these days too :)

Well, I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree. Having seen the original dub in the theater first, and then on video, I have to say that the original dub of Akira (besides being a really bad rewrite of the material) was far worse than the new dub for the DVD re-release. Most of my friends agree it's a vast improvement....if for the voice of the Colonel alone.

Pioneer does some of the best dubs, such as their Tenchi and Trigun dubs. I actually prefer the english dub of Big O to the Japanese cast (they remind too much of Cowboy Bebop, since half the cast migrated to it). The Hakkenden had some nice dub work...too bad the actual material went south halfway through. The Beserk Dreamcast game had an excellent cast (featuring Michael Bell as Gatsu...which suprised the hell out of me...moreso since he did a fantastic job). All of Warner's Batman and Superman shows feature great voice acting.

The problem is that voice-acting pays diddly-squat, and thus most voice-actors have regular acting gigs. There are few, if any, professional voice-actors...most actors view it more as slumming, if anything else.

Truthfully, I much prefer subtitle Japanese, and always have. It's only in the last four years that we've seen ANY quality dubs at all.

Around here it's just the oposite... almost everyone HATES the new dub... it doesn't sync at ALL with the lip motions, the new kids voices aren't as good (common, admit it... the louie anderson-esq voice from the first one was much better for that one kid than the new one)... Yes, the material is better, but...

I had to switch to subs about halfway through the first time I watched it... I tried to give it a shot, I really did.

Then again, I'm one of those people who thinks Akira is highly over rated in the first place.

I agree, Hakkenden went south... But the animation quality sucked from the getgo... sorta... it like flopped between good and bad.

I know voice acting doesn't pay THAT well... but heck, get some anime fans if nothing else for the job. Gawds, you can HEAR the pages being turned at times.

On the other hand, listen sometime to the dub outtakes on Kenshin or Magic Users Club... heck, the OUTTAKES were better than half the honest-to-god dubs I know :(

It's sad because there _IS_ some truely wonderfull voice acting out there in Anime... The Kenshin OAVs, Magic User's Club (except maybe Sais voice... which is still well done, just irritating as all heck)... Gundam Wing... Gundam O8th MS Team... Tenchi... Bubblegum Crisis... Record of the Lodoss War (which I think the Dub is better than the orignal VAs on)...

The talent _IS_ out there... It's just... not used enough, I guess.

I don't need big names like Armitage and Mononoke had... heck, all things being equal I'd rather NOT have big names, I sorta hate it when I recognise a VA... just some half-way decent ones.

As far as dubs vs subs go... I prefer subs too, for most things... But not all things. I listen to dubs if I'm doing something else at the time, or just half-heartedly watching something... Or if non-fans are watching Anime (who generaly get frustrated at subtitles)... or If I'm watching it late at night and tired, stuff like that.

Strangely, I got thinking... ya know, some of the "minor" releases in Anime got some of the best VAs, IMO... Maze: The Mega Burst Space for example had VERY good dubing... some of the best. Sure, mill was anoying and female maze was whiney, but they were supposed to be... and beyond that, I can't think of a single character, even minor ones, that was portrayed poorly through their VA. Crest of the Stars, Gestalt, Battle Athletes... all fairly "minor" releases, and all had good VA.

Of course, you can never get worse VA than Sailor Moon (America edition)... of course, that was downright censorship in places, and just stupid name changing in others. But even the stuff the scriptwriters didn't ruin the horrid VA did...

*shudder*

I had to jump in here. I hate Vampire Hunter D 2. Bad voice acting, the female character had no point, and the ending launch . . . "go! do it!" . . . it fell so flat. I did kinda like the very end, and thought it was a nice twist, and the fights were kinda interesting, but as far as plot and storytelling goes, it was far less interesting than even your typical episode of DBZ.

Why do people like it again?

I'm not saying it's top notch in the plot department, but the fighting, backgrounds, artwork, and animation is general was very good. While the characters weren't perfect either, and the voice acting was awful (escpecially the hand), I found it to be an overall enjoyable movie.
