Totally agree with Ashrem.
Lots of Metallica's new songs just seem to be filled with some kind of nonsensical imagery that doesn't mean anything. Not to say that there aren't a few gems, like Until It Sleeps, King Nothing, Hero of the Day, Low Man's Lyric (even though it's not metal), and, even though most people hate it that I've talked to, I'm partial to Unforgiven II. Not in the same league as the original, but still a very fine song.
Fuel et al just sound like heavy party music.
I hope that Load/ReLoad was just an experiment phase for them. I think that they're both full of good music, but it just didn't feel like Metallica, and if I want to listen to blues there are far better options.
As far as Unforgiven not being on S&M... I was stunned as well. All I could do was rationalize, "You don't tamper with perfection." That's not a satisfactory answer since we could have gotten an uber cool version, but it's the only thing that let's me sleep at night
