Well, after being utterly humiliated and having my heart broken by my ex-girlfriend(again), I've decided to just say, "screw it" and I'm gonna throw my lot in with the armed forces. I come from a military tradition(all marines. My Grandpa, Dad, all my dad's brothers, and all but one of my cousins), but I'm not sure about the marines(they're a little too intense for me). Vote on this poll and lemme know which branch of the United States Armed Forces should I enlist in?

Army
Navy
Air Force
Marines
National Guard
Coast Guard

Which one?

Well, I'd just say no to all of them, personally. I don't want to kill or be property, and that's what military life is ultimately all about.

Just the opinion of a bleeding heart...

Hey, I'm all for the brave who are willing to keep my freedoms intact. That said, I have no military background myself.

If you're just saying "screw it", I'd go Marines. While all branches of service are worthy callings, a buddy of mine strongly recommends them. He served in Somalia and in the White House honor guard. After his four years, he used his benefits to get a computer background and now works with me at a Fortune 25 company. I know another guy who served in the corps, got a history degree, went on to law school, and is now a lawyer.

Good luck, whatever your choice.

That was my original thought on the matter, but for right now I'm leaning towards National Guard. Basically, after allowing myself to be humiliated 3 times(!) by the same girl in the course of a year, and her breaking my heart more and more each time, I just decided that the time had come to separate myself from the situation that causes me pain: Home and most people I know(although obviously I'm gonna come back afterwards).

Air Force or Army. I know nothing about the military, but I've heard that going really really fast or sitting behind 10 inches of steel make you less likely to get shot.

Yeah, but personally, if I get called in, I want that chance to be shot, to take a bullet for my country, and to be able to show off the scar to women.

Never have understood why someone would just sell themselve into slavery like that. I mean that give you a signing bonus and then they command every action and every aspect of your life. Sound like selling oneself to me.

I just can't understand why someone would willingly submit to being used, abused, insulted and degraded.

If you can't understand it, go ask somebody who's been married for a while.

Me I'd suggest Coastguard - coastguard gets to muck around in boats, and coastguard rarely have to go and get themselves blown up in foreign waters.

In the Army, we called Marines "Professional Bullet Stoppers".:D

Having been in the Army and dealt with all of the other armed forces I can tell the best is definitely the Air Force. You can actually get training in there that you can use when you get out. Plus, you'll have a lot less bullsh*t to deal with than the other armed forces. The physical training test consists of riding a stationary bike without dying. You get to eat real food too! We stayed overnight at an Air Force base and we got total culture shock about how much more "civilian" the Air Force was. Plus, chicks dig pilots.

On a personal note, joining just because your girlfriend screwed you over is not a good reason to join the military. It's a good reason to join a cult, but not the military. ;) Here's why I say that: your broken heart will mend in the next few (insert time frame here) but you will STILL be in the military when it does. You can't say to your Commanding Officer, "Um, Sir - I joined because my girlfriend tore out my heart. I'm better now. Can I go home?" This will NOT go over well. Seriously - think it over a lot before you make this decision.

Also, if you do join - watch out for "barracks 'hoes". These are women who live around military bases that attach themselves to young vulnerable GIs and, shall we say, show them the ways of the world? A lot. Then they get said GI to marry them. Then they rapidly have a child with said GI, divorce them and collect child & spousal support forever. Your mileage may vary, but I saw this countless times, so be forewarned. (We actually had to go to a class that warned us of this, if anyone is wondering how prevalent it is.)
