[OT] Who are YOU and what do you DO?

My turn I guess,

I'm 34 years old and I think the business card says I'm a Network Analyst this week. I've been working for a computer company in Anchorage, Ak for the last 12 years doing everything from printer maintanence to server installs, to network conversions, to managing helpdesks. Never the same thing twice and it's been fun.

I've had a couple years of college, but got hired before I actually completed a degree.

Except for some long-term business trips I've lived in Alaska all of my life - and if home is where the heart is, then I never really left at all.

I can be glib and sarcastic and occasionally poetic. I'm told my sense of humor is dry. I take my inner child for walks at least once a month.

Just two years ago I finally got my own house, started dating my current girlfriend, and started up dnd again. All within about two months of each other.

Outside of spending time with my girlfriend and friends, my hobbies are pretty limited. I go hiking in the summer months, read Sep, Piratecat, Destan, and whatever sci-fi and fantasy books are on my shelves when I can, and prep for the two games I run each week. Somewhere in there I find time to write a storyhour, do some home maintanence, and catch a bit of tv.

This week, me and my girlfriend just got back from a vacation to the Grand Canyon. Very cool. Go see it if you can. There are holes in the ground and then there are very cool holes in the ground.

Oh, and my vote for Babylon 5 as the best tv show ever also, though Buffy is pretty good too.

That's not exactly correct. Much of English vocabulary came from French, which is why we have so many synonyms. We have both an Anglo-Saxon word and a French word. Pilgrimage/Journey, for example. But the structure of modern English still shows its' Germanic roots, if you know where to look.

(Anyway, sorry for the hijack. Carry on.)

meh its okay, i was just saying, or meant to say, that what i learned/told, was that many and most of the common words in english that we use today comes from germanic roots and et cetera, where a lot of the more "intellectual" words come from french. and if you a a dabbeler, then i have only stuck my pinky toe in the pool :)

My teacher told me that a pretty good majority of the words came from teh saxons i think or whoever came from i think northern France who became a king of england or somethign like that. anyway, french for a while became a language in england and then over time was rooted out as english patriotism and what not gained hold and french became a less popular language. im not sure how much i got right and how much is wrong, mainly cause my memory is shady.

just trying to boost my posts :).
actually i just keep thinking of things to add :D. i do find the stuff about language and history interesting though, thats one thing i forgot to mention in my 5 or so posts.

I have an amazing store of useless knowledge. I took a number of "cocktail party classes" in college, with the sole purpose of having something to chat about. I read history voraciously...

Hee, hee.

Reminds me a small get together, not really a party, my wife hosted at our house a few years ago. One of the guests, John, is a lawyer and a church deacon. He started pontificating about an issue we're not allowed to talk about here. Blah this, blah that. As often as not, his statements were flat out wrong.

So I corrected him. Over and over again. After a while, our conversation became kind of a spectator sport. This went on for many minutes until finally John said:

"Mark, how in the hell do you know all of this stuff your saying?"

I replied with a grin, "Well, John, I read."

Brought the house down. :D

i would like ot politely and vehemently disagree with this statement.

It was actually sarcasm. I was just in a major debacle regarding an artist who scanned in other people's work, Photoshopped it, and called it his own. The sad thing is, he really is talented, he just took a shortcut and he got burned, rather badly, as he should.

Art is really making opprotunities through your own effort. And that is the real beauty. Making a living at what you enjoy, always learning, always improving, and pushing yourself in new directions. I like taking the raw materials and making something of them.

I am 42, a husband of 18 years and a father of a 16 year old boy and 12 year old girl. Wife is gaming tolerant, both children enjoy games, but only my son roleplays. I am a technical writer for a large defense contractor in southeast Connecticut. Family life takes up most of my time outside of work, but I manage to keep up, and like someone else says, I have more RPG stuff than I know what to do with (but don't tell wifey that). Thank God for eBay.

I started RPGing in 1978 when I went to Dam Neck Virginia for my Navy "A" School. It kept me out of the bars on weekends and we ate, lived, and breathed it for a year or more there. When we went to our ship, our sessions tapered off, but still hung on for five more years until we all left the Navy. I have always stayed interested, but games have been sporadic since then.

I did not push my children into RPGs. I felt that one should have a decent grasp on reality to truly be safe and enjoy them the most. My benchmark was the belief in Santa Claus. So far it has worked out.

I completed my Associates degree in 1997. I have been a Scoutmaster and Girl Scout Leader. I am currently taking a sabbatical from front line scouting activities. My children and I play in the folk group in church, my son and I play guitar and daughter plays percussion.

I have plenty of RPG ideas, lots of notes, and a couple of megs of saved enworld files for information. I like to read and play guitar. I like movies and lurking the messageboards. I have a fascination for Ancient Egypt that my wife tolerates as best she can.

I often find other people my age who played when they were younger but don't have the time now. I picture myself as an octogenarian in the old folk's home having my dice rolled for me and describing "…you come into the clearing, and a horrid troll leaps from the brush at you!"

I met Sean K Reynolds and Stan! when they came through Connecticut for the Anniversary tour a couple of years ago. Sean signed my Against The Giants campaign book.

Now, I don't post here all that much, but for those of you interested this is me in a nutshell:

I'm a white male, 24 years old, 6''4, 170lbs. Got a computer engineering degree a little over 3 years ago and been working as a programmer ever since, mostly doing 3d graphics stuff for a simulation/visualisation company. So far it's been great!
Most of my spare time is taken up by volleyball. I play semi-professional vb indoors from august to april and beach when the weather permits. Lots of wind, lots of rain, lots of cold days here in Norway :). In season we practice vb 4 times a week not including weightlifting so that seriously cuts into my gaming and other hobbies. Out of season this drops to weightlifting 2-3 times a week so I try to spend a lot more time with my friends, and sate 8 months worth of party deprevation :D All other hobbies, like basketball, hiking, watching all kinds of sports (yeah, I'm a sports fanatic and can be a real couch-potato at times) and computer games tend to get crammed into the few hours left over. Now, admittedly, this doesn't leave much time for R&R, but....you know.....there's _always_ time for good whisky. An hour with a good book, some background music and just a sip of ......hmmmmm....Macallan or perhaps Highland Park, will recharge my batteries just fine.
I've been gaming for about 8 years. Mostly DnD (2nd & 3rd editions), but with some Gurps, WEG Star Wars and d20 Modern thrown in at irregular intervals. We've had fairly good group consistency for many years and most of us have settled down in the same town so I hope to keep playing for many years to come.

OK, I've stretched the definition of lunch far enough already, reading this thread, so I'll quit now....

I work as a welder for Harley-Davidson during the graveyard shift. Yes, I'm a vampire! Up all night, sleep all day. Really hard to get used to that shift. Been doing it for 3 years and still find it hard to sleep during the day. Fun place to work though.

My off time consists of playing with my daughter, playing rpg's, riding my motorcycle, and reading some books.
