[OT] Who is your favourite DJ?

Hi Meepo! :)

Heh..the latest issue of newsweek had a picture of two hot, barely dressed raver girls dancing around, what with their clothes falling off and whatnot, and a headline that was something like "Don't go to raves!"

As if. :D

I'll second DJ Shadow and DJ Krush. Also DJ Premier, Cut Chemist and Dan the Automator are all excellent.

W3rd. Automator is incredible. He's great in Gorillaz.

Also, Dr. Octogon for science based hip hop.

Fantastic Plastic Machine is neat.

I'll join the queue giving up for Shadow, Crush, Cut Chemist and Automator.

Also must add Kid Koala and the original Ninja Tuners, Coldcut. Used to love DJ Richie Rich for the cutup stuff, likewise the Marx Brothers. DJ Dimitri makes me giggle and I'm still a sucker for Towa Tei.

I myself have been collecting the wax since '92! I used to play out at some clubs in San Francisco and some other bay area spots ( above and underground ).

I quit in '95 after I realized I couldn't possibly earn a living from it, and the hours were causing my "real" job some trouble. ( Well -that and the fact that some heroin fiend threatened to kill me If i did not play some reggae music for him - think about THAT for a minute ) !!!

I still collect music though, and play at the occassional house party for friends.

BUT - enough about me. My favorite, most consistant DJ is local favorite "Jeno" ( came here from the UK in '91 or so ). If you like Sasha & Digweed or John Kelly, you will probably like Jeno. He has a more "subdued" or underground style than Oakenfold or such.

You can hear Jeno's mixing for FREE on his website:

click on "CD's" on the right to find a couple Real Audio files.

I'm just beginning to get into this type of music thanks to my friend Sean Glenn (www.superunicorn.com), but my stand-out favorite is DJ Vadim (www.djvadim.com). I strongly suggest folks check out "Life from the Other Side," his most accessible CD. I've listened to mine so many times I've ruined a few of the tracks. :)

I add my vote to the Oakenfold and Sasha and Digweed boxes, as well as Cut Chemist AND NuMark (both member of Jurassic 5, one of the best Rap groups IMHO). I've seen all the above live and have to say they all put on an awesome show.

Some people I've seen missing on the list are Park and Wilson (at some point I think they were called Tilt), BT and Man With No Name.

Also, if your ever in the New Orleans area try to find DJ Indio, he's a local DJ and opened up for both Oakie and S&D and was just as good as the "headliners".

BTW ECSTASY MELTS YOUR BRAIN

I know! Ain't it great?

My big problem with e is that you don't know what you're getting. Oh well, I quit the stuff a while ago anyways.

I've been to a couple shows lately (Carl Cox, for one, and anyone else who can make it out to Calgary) but I haven't really been into the music. But when it's great, man oh man...

kinda... but the art is a) getting them to mix well together and b) choosing tracks, and reading a dance floor.

especially b. you can be technically amazing and mix record at totally different BPMs and time signatures, but if you choose crap tracks you still suck.
There is an art to DJing, and one that you can indeed get very good at, but there's a huge disparity of respect in the dance music scene. Never have so many been respected so much for so little effort.*

Standard beatmixing and EQing is about as easy as learning to ride a bike, and canny track selection is just that. The discipline and skill set necessary to produce a decent dance music track is a whole different ball game. If I could click my fingers and turn every wannabe DJ into a wannabe producer, the dance music scene would become a hell of a lot better than it is, overnight.

*: This doesn't go for those who end up on the road living the nightmare life all the time, they work hard for the privilege.
