(OT) Your Thanksgiving Feast - What is it?

I'll be at my cousin's this year. He got married recently and his wife will be doing the dinner so it'll be a bit of a surprise.

But lord, I am praying for the turkey to be stuffed with oyster stuffing. YUMMY!

This will be the first year in quite a while that we haven't had a large gathering - it will just be the 4 members of our immediate family and a friend from high school. So far the menu is:

Turkey and Tofurkey(My friend is a vegetarian)
Stuffing and gravy
baked yams w/pecan and brown sugar topping
orange-cranberry relish
Green salad (might skip this - Salad takes up space that could otherwise be filled with turkey , yams, and pie)
pomegranate salad (My wife is a sucker for this)
green bean cassarole (you know with the french fried onions and mushroom soup. I also add a goodly amount of parmesan cheese)
the freakin' pumpkim pie
apple pie
Mulled wine and cider

I don't know any vegetarian that would eat "Tofurkey" yuk!

My wife is a vegetarian, but she is going all out for her family this year, including a chorizo cornbread stuffing...

She'll probably just eat some twigs or something...

Yeah, well, I myself wouldn't touch the stuff. He's recent convert, so we'll see if this experience drives him back over the edge...

Anyway, he's bringing it and everything else is compatible, so, it's all good (just maybe not in the gastronomical sense) :)

Turkey
Ham
Roast Lamb
Roast Beef
Corned Beef
Hamburger

Well, all the vegetarians got to have a little mini-conversation, right? Where's the rest of the strict carnivores? :D

heh, just read the whole thread... :) I'm a vegetarian and i eat tofurky. Been a vegitarian since... 1996. I've been vegetarian long enough that i can't eat meat anymore. last time someone poisoned me with some hidden pork, i just about died. for all you veggies out there, watch out for a traditional chinese fried tofu wrapped in bean thread. they sneak tiny bits of pork in them sometimes, don't tell you about it, and given the spicyness of the tofu its undetectable...

i don't think that's freaky, i think that's the start of a cool tradition!

for Christmas Eve dinner, one side of the family likes a traditional turkey and ham and accessories dinner. the other side orders pizza! :D

Last year I finally convinced my family to have Spaghetti for dinner. Spaghetti ROCKS!

We do it because my mom likes to make a big breakfast and who wants to cook and clean two big meals in one day.

In 1997, as part of a college course on agriculture in the US, I visited the tempeh factory (Turtle Island, I think?) that makes Tofurkey. It was a new product at the time, and they gave us all little samples of the "drumsticks," really tempeh with wild rice and cranberries in a wild mushroom gravy. It was really tasty, although not really turkey-like.

I also tried making a vegan turkey one year out of seitan and soymilk skin. Although you could've played killer dodgeball with it, eating it was out of the question :D.

BFG, if your wife needs good vegetarian recipes for Thanksgiving, point her over to www.epicurious.com (in fact, all y'all cooks oughtta head over there). They've got some great ideas. I particularly recommend their Roasted Butternut Squash and Caramelized Onion Tart. It's a very satisfying, rich pie full of Thanksgiving-y flavors. My meat-eating family all loved it (although for them it was a side-dish).

Thanks! I'll direct her over there tonight. So far, she'll be able to eat the mashed potatoes, a pea dish, a cranberry-orange thingy, and of course salad, but something special would be nice - the squash sounds REAL good!
