Check this out, if you've played Windwalker you might agree on my interpretation of the sword via 3e.

The master sword is an incredible artifact thats has been wielded by many a green wearing hero's over the centuries. Crafted by the very dieties that created the world, the Master Sword serves as the ultimate weapon against darkess and evil. Only the chosen one may draw the blade from its resting spot.

The Master Sword has 3 distinct levels of power. Centuries of dormancy and the forces of evil have drained the blade to its weakest form. All 3 "levels" of power are detailed below. Only through a special quest and ritual involving the sages of wind and earth can restore the sword to its ultimate power.

Master Sword Dormant
This incarnation of the sword acts as a +1 Holy Longsword. It can also deflect any spells which inflict hit point damage from an evil source or of the evil subtype that targets the weilder directly or in his area. The wielder may attempt to deflect an incoming spell targeted at him back to its source by readying an action. In order to successfully deflect the spell, he must make an attack roll (STR Bonus does not apply to this roll). By doing this the weilder sacrifices any chance for a saving throw. The deflection roll in effect replaces his savingthrow. Only 1-3rd level spells can be deflected at this point.

Master Sword Awakened
The first ritual awakens the sword and increases its power. It behaves as a +3 Holy Longsword and its Spell Deflection abilities increase to deflect spells up to 6th level.

True Master Sword
The final and strongest level of the Master Sword. After being awakened by both sages the Master Sword acts as a +5 Holy Longsword. At this level the holy property doubles in strength (from +2d6 to +4d6 bonus damage), and the sword's enhancement bonus is considered to be +7 against evil creatures. It's spell deflection proprties increase to spells of up to 9th level. It glows whenever an evil entity is within 120 ft of the weilder.

Only one who is chosen by the gods can wield this weapon. This indivudal must first pass numerous tests and solve various quizes and puzzles before even discovering the master swords location. The Master Sword is an artifact of the highest magnitude.

I would change the way that the magic reflection works.

I would only allow it to work on spells that directly target the wielder and do hitpoint damage.

You can bounce the Shadow Knights magic back to them, but it only hurts you if you miss. It doesn't damage nearby items that can normally be destroyed (such as pots). However, you can use the ability very late in the game to bounce back a magic-missile like spell.

In my opinion, you should be able to bounce an Energy Drain with this weapon, but *not* a Horrid Wilting.

I would suggest changing the reflect ability as well, well-perhaps just define its mechanics a bit more. For instance, perhaps limit it to ranged touch attacks, and allow him to reflect them back using his own ranged attack bonus if its successful.

I like the flavor although overall I think its final version is a bit weak to be a major artifact. Very nice though, I'm a big Zelda fan as well.

You might add that small characters can wield it one handed. I'd say that Link is small sized, and he doesn't seem to have any trouble doing it. Then again, maybe not.

First off, I'd allow the Str bonus (or Dex bonus) to the attempt to deflect the spell. We ARE dealing with the Master Sword, after all. Dex might be more appropriate, since this is a matter of timing.

The deflection should only only apply to single-target spells with some energy-base (elemental, force, negative, whatever).

I guess a deflection check would be an attack roll against what the DC of the spell would be calculated to be. Actually directing the spell back to the caster should be a ranged attack.

At its highest level of power, the weilder should get at least 1 deflection attempt per round as a free action.

You could have the Master Sword grant the wielder the Exceptional Deflection feat (from Epic HB) when wielding it. That pretty much covers the mechanic you describe.
