Our Physical Fitness

I went back to my old gym this week, and I'm already feeling much more encouraged than I was prior. Like @Scribe, I'm rehabbing my shoulder. For shoulder exercises (and chest presses), it's been baby weights for lots of reps and not pressing too close to failure. For everything else, I've been staying on track. I'm using Jeff Nippard's Essentials program, which tends to lend itself well to rehab and calorie deficits (where I don't have a lot of energy). I've lost 8 pounds in the last month and half, so the progress there's been good.

I'm hoping to drop another 8 within the next 2 months. Once I've done that, it'll be "main-gaining" and back to a higher volume regimen.

Big thumbs up for Jeff Nippard's stuff. I've learned a lot from his videos, and his presentation style is just what I want.

Jeff tends to get a bit deep in the weeds for me, but I watch occasionally. My mainstays are usually Mike Israetel (his sense of humor works for me) and Sean Nalewanyj, with maybe the occasional Larry Gao or Lean Beef Patty for youthful fun and inspiration.

I like Israetel's humor too. I just hope he gets off the steroids. I will say though I appreciate his honesty about them. Generally I try to stick to channels where people are doing things natural (though that is getting harder and harder to find lol)

Logically of course, you are correct. It's hard sometimes to just not look around and think 'damn...' however.

I mean I'm in a small city, and you would think if you dropped these guys and gals in a gym 20 or 25 years ago? Absolute fitness model type bodies.

I am approaching 50 so just happy to be alive. And I don't know your age (you might be my age, older or younger). But one thing I have noticed online, especially on youtube, is guys are starting get body issues like I have never seen before (I mean there was always pressure to get muscles, but I've never seen guys so into looking like models before and so stressed out if they aren't getting the same physique as people they see with youtube channels. I am not saying this is the case with you but I mention it just to point out, some of these people who look like they are in peak physical shape, are headed for an early grave because of how they are getting there (there is a lot of performance enhancing drugs being used soley for aesthetics these days, and often recklessly).

So I just focus on my health and how I feel. Every once in a while it is good to look in the mirror and see you are fit, but my advice is only pay attention to others if it is giving you positive motivation. And only pay attention to your own reflection if it is helping and you aren't going overboard. I weigh myself in the morning, and that generally gives me an honest sense of what I ought to be doing that day.

Out of curiosity where is it you are feeling your own fitness is lacking in relation to them? (i.e. do you feel like you are not losing enough weight, or do you feel like you ought to have more muscle mass, etc)

Mike Israetel can be funny but he is also way, way out there on some other stuff. I don't know if you listen to any of Peter Attia's stuff, but the show where Israetel was a guest was pretty crazy. I very much have to keep him compartmentalized.

I also like Will Tennyson for just the funny, non-serious side of fitness.

My 2nd of the two leg days with bonus range of motion sets for the shoulder. Knee stability is improving, its not pain like my shoulder, but I dont wish knee issues on anyone.

I was really happy with the feel on my various squats, and deadlift and the numbers went up on isolation leg extension/curls so win's all around.

I did have 1 early start this week at work, and 1 bad dinner this week so was/am feeling pretty drained and my upper body is just tired today.

Another half hour or so of work to hopefully close out one task, then early bed.

Friday - Shoulder/Chest day of suffering.

What kind of exercises do you do for legs? I am on a leg day and looking for ideas.

My routine is very messy. I did some light legs this morning and am trying to summon the energy for chest and maybe a run (the latter is going to depend on how long the chest routine takes me today as I am on a schedule).

If I don't run I will try shadow boxing in doors (but part of the reason for the run is to get sunlight and regulate mood)

Oh dont get me wrong, I know where I'm at in life. Firmly in that middle age, and just looking to essentially set a baseline level of fitness to carry me into the 50's.

I feel young enough that I could get into good shape, if that makes sense. My uncle did a similar thing when he was in his 40's, and I guess I picked up on that as a kid. Now, my definition of 'good shape' is likely not everyone's, but without too much navel gazing thats kind of where I'm at.

In an ideal world, I get a bit bigger, but not shredded, that likely would make me a bit of a pain to be around for my wife...

My leg day generally.

Light warmup on a bike/elliptical.
Hack Squats starting very low to warm up the knees (set 1) then 3 more sets at meaningful (80% ish) effort.
Calf Raises at meaningful effort.
Dead Lifts at meaningful effort.
Squats at light and then middle effort. Knee's/Back take a bit of a beating on this. Fun fact, I did so much weight as a kid, this is the root cause for what ruined my knees.
Leg Extension at meaningful. If I had dont this more as a kid, I may have avoided the issues in my knees!
Leg Curl at meaningful.
Leg Press Machine - This thing really targets my hamstring/glutes. I dont know why, but this one I can go up to the max on the machine, I will have to replace this with a plates driven leg press soon.

Depending on time, and desire to suffer, I will then jump on the bike at high RPM for 10 min.

Huh. The only thing I think I've seen him be a little bit out there on is some techno-utopian kind of stuff about medical science and about AI. I've only seen a couple of clips of him with Attia and it was really straightforward nutrition and exercise stuff. His video on lifting at different ages, what to expect and what to prioritize, I found really inspirational and have shared with a few folks.

I haven't seen anything too crazy from him either (besides the steroids and some internet beefs I have seen between him and other YouTubers). But he is operating in a sphere of the internet where you are going to encounter ideas you don't always agree with. So I take everything with a grain of salt there. I had to take some science fitness courses when I was in college (for some reason our school had that as a part of its required curriculum which was kind of interesting). And he reminds me of the people who used to teach in that department. It is very rare though to find a channel where you are going to think everything the person says is right, true, and even sane. It is just the nature of the fitness sphere on YouTube
